Hows everyones job situation?

Recommended Posts

Been pulling 60-70 hr weeks for so long I am starting to go insane. Whats worse I missed the entire fall fishing season. I really need to get out on the Lake next week.

However, as good as we are doing, I have been ever mindfull of those around me having significant issues finding or keeping work. I feel especially for those about to graduate college.

That being said, maybe with the good number of folks on here we cna help each other out a bit.

Anyone who is in the Charlotte, NC area and works in IT, if you are looking shoot me a PM, I have a line into a number of IT headhunters and area companies.

You are lucky to have work M Starr. Glad to see your outfit doing well! I am not IT, but I think your offer is very generous. If I was graduating, and an IT I would definitely get ahold of you!

I hate it. I work part-time at k-mart while I'm still in school. Last night customer were cussing me out for things I have nothing to do about.

I hate people that are insane shoppers.

Last night, the manager announced 4 time that store is closing. She would announce 15 til, 10 til, 5 til, and of course the actual closing hour. Well, usually on normal hour the lights will start going out on certain parts of store about 10-15 til. THey are automatic which means we cannot turned it off manually without having reset the entire system or something like that. Well since it holiday hours we have extended hours and last night as normal the manager announce all the notices that store closing, etc. Then she told us to clear out store check for customer assit them and lets get them out. I go toward christmas department and the lights goes off right at 12 am and exactly when manager announced k-mart is now closed. This evil evil lady was beating the wrapping paper on the shelf. I was like "ma'am...can I help you find anything? we have to close down the store." she replied "for starter you can turned on the *^)&^ lights so I can continue shopping." I thinking to myself "are you ^&*^& kidding me?" So, i calmy explain the lights are automatic and go off at this time every night and I cannot do anything about it. She finally grabs two wrapping paper and go to checkout where all employees are ready to leave, but it took 10 minute to ring her up, because she was complaining about the prices. Even though all price was correct.. >:(

Oh, we also appearently stole some guys buggy, but that another store. The point of the latter store is do not leave your buggy unattended for longer then 3-5 minutes.

It looks as though I will have a job for the rest of the year even though the school budget has ben cut by 12.5 %.  I am not sure about next year. In the mean time, I will enjoy the Holidays and two weeks of paid vacation.

Maybe I will do a little fishing too  :D

The job situation for me is GREAT!!!  Just got a great promotion.  I went from making sandwiches all day busting my but making a decent wage but never having a set schedule or hours.  I never new if I was going to get 24 hours or 48 hours, I landed a corporate job with the same company using my computer degree.  I now have a desk job with a set schedule and a great raise.  Awesome benefits with a 100% matching 401K  ;D.  I take care of a time and attendance system supporting 16,000 employees and 132 stores throughout California and parts of Nevada.  It includes database management, support calls, network troubleshooting.  It's a pretty sweet gig and I'm very fortunate to be working for a good company with a good job at my age.

Sorry guys.... I felt like bragging a bit  :P

Sucks.

As a carpenter, when the housing market is the suck, so are my hours. Been real patchy since last november. Work 50 hrs a week for three weeks, sit around for a month has been the normal way it works. last winter i worked 0 hours in carpentry in  3 months. Pretty ugly. The greater sacramento area has been in the top 5 hardest hit areas in the country for home prices.

Got a few months of work lined up, but its out of town, so i'll be living in a hotel 4 or 5 nights a week :( Great pay though.

Pretty ugly.

Sucks here too.

Graduated from College a year and half ago, and I'm still working at a moving company.  The job is OK around the end of the month when people need to move out of their apartments and tips are good.  The rest of the month I'm struggling to do anything.    It's really frustrating!  Guess I'll just keep fishing and become a big shot one day.   ;)

I got a new job about a month ago, actually using my degree (for the first time) and I am 31. So dont feel too bad BassAckwards! Your time will come. A nice raise, a great job and great benefits. The company is an investment firm, been around for 103 years or something and have never had a lay off. Oh, and there are 2 ponds, full of fish on the compound. When the ice thaws, I know exactly where many a lunch hour will be spent!

I work for the public school system in our county so my hours are a set 40.  I've got an interview Monday for what I really want to do and that is work in the Regional Jail.  Both jobs will always be around so luckily I don't have to worry about layoffs and such.

With the media sounding negative announcements about our economy, it is normal and expected for everyone to be concerned about their careers.

However, many geographical locations are doing fine and will continue to do so.

Michigan is and will be a problem until they get their taxes lowered.

Northern states with unions will continue to feel the pinch.

Not being political or negative. Just pointing out some existing facts.  :)

P.S.  I will not get involved with any discussions on unions or taxes.

I work in local television and have for 20 years. Automotive was our biggest single category of advertiser. Before the big 3 started talking bailout, they cancelled their TV contracts.

We laid off roughly 5% of our staff...That said, even small television stations operate with healthy profit margins, and we will weather this storm.

solid here as surprising as it may sound,  seeing Stanley Bostitch has closed 2 major facilities, 1 in RI (Quonsett) and the Clinton, CT plant. Plus 2000 jobs lost throught out the USA last week, including the wife whom which worked for the Bostitch plant in EG, RI for 15 yrs, she was lucky to get a package and will be going back to school.

And go figure, I make nails and I have overtime, but I did take the next 2 weeks off...I hope things get better for everyone and we're all fortunate enough to enjoy the holidays.

What exactly is IT?

It stands for Information Technology.  Essentially it means any career in the high-tech industry.  Typically it's jobs like network administrators, computer technicians, web designers and developers, systems analysts, etc.

My business, residential property management, is going great.  Of course, that's the way it is when the housing market is terrible--even if people can't buy a home, they still have to live somewhere, which means renting.

The only problem is, I hate this business, and am ready to do something else...

When you move to Chicago, You can open your own business. Get a stand at Wrigley and you can sell Kleenex after the 5th inning of each game, for all the crying fans! :'(

Definitely the best entreprenurial advice for this economy!  How does the saying go again?  "Only three things in life are certain:  death, taxes, and the cubs will choke?"

You could do that at the new Mets stadium after the 8th!  ;D
