It's all over the place that he is coming back to New England. I don't know how I feel about this.   :-/

He needed to go, he knew that. Not too surprised.

He's a good guy, though. He wont be out of work for long. Coorindator position maybe.

Any ideas on replacement?   I don't have a clue.

ESPN over the past week said for the most part, since 1993, ND really hasn't been a premier job.

Any thoughts on that as well.

ESPN keeps talking about the Cincinnati head coach. It sounds like he is pretty good at rebuilding programs.

on college game day on saturday, kirk herbstreet said it best. he said notre dame hasn't been relevant for 20 years, so why fire charlie weiss? i agree, notre dame has been weak for a long time. that institution will NEVER be what it was.

He's going to be the Browns new offensive co-ordinator. Brady Quinn is in love with him.

Well since they have the NBC contract, let them do the hiring. They couldn't make any more bad decisions that the faculty hasn't allready been through.

Maybe Lou would come back. That's the only reason I would want to watch.

Any chance that Tony Dunge or Bill Cowher would want the job?

Actually I saw on tv that coach Stoops from Oklahoma is a possibility. I saw that yesterday. I hope he gets the job. I don't like him in the Big 12. He's not my favorite person.   BTW Hook em

Here is my 2 cents........they cannot afford to feed Mark Magino so they will not hire him.  Charlie duped them into believing that his surgery decreased his food intake.....they will not make that mistake again.

As for who is next......it has to be someone who hates coaching.  Here is the reason why.

1)  Tough academic standards (if this is really true) will decrease the amount of potential recruits they have to choose from.  They had better make sure they get the cream of the reduced crop....and this is getting harder.

2)  There is a lack of "good 'ol catholic boys" in this country.  If you were one of the good 'ol boys ND was the mecca for you.  There seems to be a trend that this is no longer the case.  (not starting a religious war here...it is just my opinion)  The pull to ND for religious/ historical reasons seems to be decreasing.

3)  Who wants to play in the cold snowy state of Indiana when most of the recruits they are looking at can choose a nice warm coastal state.  Weather has affected where recruits are going, along with many other factors.

4)  ND does not belong to a conference and has no guarantee for an automatic BCS birth by winning a conference title.  They are guaranteed an at-large birth if they finish within the top 8 in the BCS standings, but this would turn the BCS upside down.  If they put a school who does not belong to the big 6 conferences into the National Title game all the other at-large bids would have a legitimate complaint for being excluded.  This would preclude them from playing for the "Title" game.

So with all this said....who wants this job.  It is a coach killer and the next person who takes it would be a fool.  This is no longer a bog time job.  Just my 2 cents.

I also heard Urban Meyer.

These guys would be morons to leaver their gigs. Think about it.... these guys are Kngs of the Town.

I can see nick76 perspective except that ND would turn the BCS upside down if they got a title shot over the other non bcs colleges, don't see it that way, cause they have rich football tradition.

Look at the vast majority of NC's over the past 20 years or so.   Most of them multiple winners and or from true football mecca's.

Michigan, Ohio State, Neb, OU, UTex, Miami, LSU, FSU, FU, Bama, USC, Tenn.

ND belongs in the mix.  They got $$$$$$$ or they wouldn't be buying Charlie's contract out at an estimated 18-20 mil.   Deep pockets,

Tell me, just how many non bcs colleges have you seen in the mix before the BCS when it was the AP?    BYU and who else?

ND belongs in the mix, I also wish they would join a conference, but then they would lose the TV $$$$$$$$$$ they have been getting from NBC as long as I can remember ND football, and thats 40+ years.

I agree with you Matt Fly when you talk about tradition rich schools.  I believe that ND is one of them, I am just not sure how a series of really bad hires helps .  When it is public knowledge that your first two guys you would like to hire are Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops you set the bar very high.  Each of them would be fools (or at least insane) to leave what they have achieved and try to start again at such early points in their careers.  If they were pushing 70 and had multiple years of success.......why not run the risk.  Not to mention the very large contracts they have both just signed.  This now leaves you at the 3rd or 4th guys on your list.  This automatically fails the bar already set and thus puts a coach in a bad position when they are expected to achieve unrealistic goals.  This is a bad situation anyway you have it.  They would have been better off to stick with Wies, let him try to earn some of that money and pray for the best outcome.  He can recruit.......he jsut needed to find his niche when coaching.

As for the BCS.......just because a program has a storied history does not make them the best.  The BCS is set up to allow two teams from the big six conferences to compete for the national title.  If this were not the case there would have already been at-large teams competing.  I truly believe that the BCS discrimates against smaller schools outside of the big six conferences and thus ND would also be put at a disadvantage.  Would I like to see them return to their glory....for sure, but the BCS does not foster that relationship.

Couldn't happen to a more delusional fanbase...

Past success does not dictate future success.  And Kirk Herbstreit said it best on College Gameday this past weekend -- ND hasn't been relevant for 15 years.

They're a good program with good players that haven't done squat on the national stage in nearly 2 decades.  Money talks but I imagine there are many coaches out there who see how quickly the last 3 guys were driven out of South Bend and are not too eager to take the plunge into an unwinnable situation.

Sorry, the NON BCS colleges bring nothing to the table?

Nothing.    They don't have one major network contract for conference games.    What does that mean?    Viewing audiences for sponsor dollars.

They have small stadiums.   Even the mighty TCU HornFrogs only seat 35K, why would the Texas Longhorns want a series with them, we travel 35K fans!!!!

They own no major bowls, or they have no rights to the  major bowls in any major cities?

The big money bowls are owned by the big boys.

RoseBowl is Pac 10 and Big 10

   Sugar Bowl is SEC

   Orange Bowl ACC

   Fiesta Bowl  Big XII

ND at least brings something to the dance besides empty pockets unlike most.
