Is it normal...

Recommended Posts

... to start calling your Uncles by their first name at 15 and a half?

I've noticed that I've started calling them by their first name, instead of Uncle X.

However I don't do this with Aunts or ladie grandparents.

Is this normal? Especially at my age?

Not normal. IMO, it all has to do with respect. "Uncle" and things of that nature are not affected by age.

I am 31 and still address all relatives by their appropriate titles, unless directed to do otherwise.

You also have to take your up-bringing and family traditions into consideration. While it might be "normal" in my family to continue using the phrases, it may be "normal" in your family to not use them.

Hmmm. Its wierd though because I only call my uncles by their real name.

Every other type of relative get the Aunt, Opa, Oma, Papa, Nana, etc.

Like I said, it may be different.

Try asking what they would prefer.  After all, they do outrank you.   ;)

It will be "normal" until one of them smacks you up-side the head for impertinence.  ;D ;D ;D

I have a few uncles that are VERY close to my age.  Talking 3-6 years older.  While I refer to them as Uncle Eric, Dave, Jim, etc.  I don't always address them as such.  Since we all grew up together, they are like my older brothers, and we are all very close.  Otherwise, I use uncle or aunt before their name.  The only exception was when I was working for my family business.  My uncle Jeff didn't care for it during working hours.

I am 25 and still do not do that. I have a 30 year old cousin that still say uncle what ever. Most of my family is at or over the 15 year old mark. They still also say uncle or aunt. I was taught at a young age to say aunt or uncle in front of there name.

To me it all comes down to respect. Ever try to call your mom, dad, or grandparents by there first name when you not joking. You don't because of respect. If you do I am sure you would get smacked.

I was raised by a guy who for 12 years was dad to me. Once i got to finally be around my real father I still called the other guy dad. Last time I saw him I still called him dad. He had no problem with me calling him randy. But I never could. Even to this day when me and his son my half brother are together I still refer to him as dad.

So to me it all comes down to respect.

I worked at a bus terminal back when I was in high school, and my mother was the supervisor. I called her by name whenever the other employees were around, and in return she treated me just like the other employees.

I wouldn't dream of doing it now. ;D

I call all of my aunts and uncles by their names, and always have. As a matter of fact, my grandmother's husband, who she has been married to for well over 20 years, I still call Paul...not Grampa.

I do it, and have no problem. I probably started a few years ago, and have had no complaints, nor would I expect my uncles to complain about something like that.

If I had called one of my uncles by name that would have been the result-at least when they were younger. As has already been said, it is just a matter of respect-at least in my family.

I'm sixty-four and have three living Aunts and an Uncle.  It has never entered my mind to address them as anything other than Aunt or Uncle.

When I was maybe 10 I had been watching The Simpsons, and I thought it was cool that Bart kept calling his dad Homer, so I decided to try calling my dad by his first name. Lets just say I only made that mistake once.

My good Friend down in Texas, all his nephews call him by his name without the "uncle" added to it. They also call their dad by his name as well. However they must call their grandparents "grandma & grandpa".No exceptions. They tried to call their grandpa by name once and he gave his son an earful of cuss words..LOL

IMO if a family member feels disrespected if you dont call them "uncle" or "aunt" then that person doesnt know you very well. unless, of course, you really dont respect them.

Amen. I am 47 and still address my remaining Uncles as just that...Uncle. I think it is a matter of respect...and not just for them, but from me.
