BROAD QUESTIONS ABOUT JIGS and Structure

Hey Fellas: This is pretty broad and I am curious about some of the answers; Here it goes

If you locate good fish , in water lets say 10 to 16 ft. Some of the fish are in weeds others in points by drop offs and you are catching fish with a particualr jig, or jighead/trailer combo and you are looking for better fish. Is the key in the bottom make up or do you switch jigs when looking for bigger fish? Lets say a heavier jig or a different profile? Or do you look for cover on the structure that is bound to hold better fis? Or change the angle you are fishing the cover?

I am sorry, I know there are a lot of variables there, but now that I am actually catching fish regularly and with confidence ,using jigs, I am looking to getting more proficient at targeting bigger fish. ALL MY BEST FISH THIS YEAR HAVE COME ON JIGS!

Thanks

Dominick

I think it's more about the "where" than the "what". If you're catching fish, the location must be right. I suggest trying a bigger profile. Sometimes the problem is just getting past the little fish. Bigger baits will weed out a few of the smaller fish and improve your chances of finding better quality bass.

I agree with that.  But one other thing.  I dont throw football heads in the weeds.  Typically leads to lots of grass and pulls back hard.  Throw a pointed head that will slide through them.

Thanks G Man , I have kind of figured that out a little through trial and error. I use Slider heads and Lucky Strike finesse in the weeds these days

agreed with rw. use size to your advantage. you can fish out the dinks first, if you choose, but it takes time you may not want to spend and you also run the risk of "spooking the bed". I'm sure you've all seen that situation where the bite stops after they've eventually become spooked.

I will say that it's hard to bypass the dinks with larger lures, though - if the bite is on they'll most likely hit it anyway. the odds are in your favor, though - if there's one large lure the dinks are reluctant to hit, in my experience, it's a big jig and trailer.

I'm always interested in methods of getting the big fish out of beds when the bite's on so this subject intrigues me. I'd like to become more proficient in this area.

I have noticed that "typically" not always the little ones are not located in the same area as the big ones.  Changing a location might be another benifit.  If your catchin lil ones in the weeds try a rocky point or rocks for bigger fish. vice versa.   Its not always a givin but just my experience.
