Nice Crappie ?

Featured Replies

Took some light spinning gear to a pond near me today. Using small floating minnow (2 1/2') was going to try for some Bream or small Bass. Retrieved a cast almost all the way back and caught a glimpse of a large fish as it flashed sideways and ate the lure! Butt pinched a doughtnut hole in my jeans, thought it was a Bass and knew there was no way to handle it with the gear I was using. Realized it had to be something else after the first time it tried to run. Turned out to be LARGE Crappie. Don't have a scale but it was little more than 15" long and about 7" at widest part. You could drop a golf ball in it's mouth  :o! Any of ya'll that fish for Crappie a lot....maybe take a guess as to size...

No, didn't get girth :-[. Actually didn't know if the formula that works on Bass worked on other species. Have a hard plastic tackle box with ruler on top was all I had. If it had been a LARGE Bass though, come Hell or high water I would have found a way ;D.

When young fished a lot for Bream and Crappie with my Daddy. Just thought if not the largest Crappie I've caught, pretty durn close ;)...

Man, that's a biggun'! I think you should have weighed her:

TN State Record (white crappie): 5 lb 1 oz

TN State Record (black crappie): 4 lb 4 oz

8-)

I fish for Crappie quite a bit. Not knowing the girth I would guess it to be between 1.5-2 lbs. Usually around here a 13-14 incher will go about a pound. I caught one that was 17inches and was a little over 2.5 lbs. Of course they usually get taller as they get bigger. So the girth could have played a large part on how much the fish weighed. Either way, it was a nice fish.

Yea, that seems nice. I like the pictures of the crappies when they are laying down. I dont like the size of their mouth! But still a very cool fish!

i'd say a pound and a half, theres a pond near me that i catch crappies that size this time of year when i'm fishing for bass.  They sure do love jerkbaits.  I wish i had the picture to post but its on my g.f's phone.  I'll get her to text it to my email and see if i can't get it up tommorrow to see if the last one I caught is about the same size

A 14" White Crappie is usually around a lb and a half. Sometimes a black crappie is a little thicker and heavier, but not much difference in weight. Nice crappie though.

I have caught 2 or 3 Crappie on a No. 3 Mepps while Bass fishing at that pond that were "nice". So far he's the "nicest". I guess his stars were lined up right or something, cause he sure almost ended up in hot grease ;)...

BTW thanks to everyone who tried to come up with an answer for me :)
