Dead sticking a fluke?

Featured Replies

I have heard thru quite a few local fishermen.  "Deadstick that fluke, dead stick that fluke!"  I have a general idea....could someone explain this deadsticking for me.  Heard its good in the winter too.

Thanks!!!

My approach is "modified deadsticking":

I fish the Slug-Go (fluke) as a feeding minnow with very little forward movement. When I do move it forward, I then leave it in one spot again and twitch the bait repeatedly to immitate baitfish concentrating on a very small area.

its simple man i prefer zoom super fluke's all you do is cast it to your desired spot and let it fall to the bottom. also what i like to do is give it a few twitches, not jerks, twitches. i find that dead sticking really works when the bass are just not in an aggressive mood its an easy meal.

Try deadsticking a YUM Houdini Shad, and don't alter the tail (leave that rubber piece in the middle). If you center the hook so that the bait falls horizontally, the tail slowly wiggles back and forth. The action is pretty unbelievable  ;)

Deadsticking means leaving the bait alone. Cast it out and let it sink, that's it. The water is all that's needed to make the bait move on the fall. But once it settles, you leave it alone. It's a tactic that requires patience. It also takes a little bit of skill, because it's hard to feel the end of your line if there's not a little tension there. Personally, I like it. I cast out, let it fall and...wait. Then I try to twitch my rod, slowly, for as long as I can until there's just not enough tension to do it anymore. Then I reel in a few feet, and do the same thing again. You can really deadstick any soft plastic, but I think it's mostly used on Flukes and Senkos.

I've been experimenting with flukes this summer myself. I think I'm going to stick with the Zoom. But the Tiki Shadick, with a straight tail end, has produced a few too. But only in the basic colors. The wild ones have done nothing for me.

I found this technique earlier this year on this site. I used it for prespawn bass and it worked great. I have not quit using it yet. I know its not supposed to work all year but dang it it really does. I have never caught over a 4 pounder this year I have broken five twice six once and seven last Sunday. All using this technique. It is awesome on the smaller ponds I fish. I find I do not catch as many but the ones I do have more size, and using a Octopus Gammy circle hook they hook themselves.
