Questions about tournaments

Featured Replies

When you want to have a tournament I heard in RI that you need a permit for the pond.  Is this the same every where?  Also how do the prices work for getting them is it based on the amount of entries or the acres of the lake, etc?  I just would like to understand how the tournaments and trails work and how they go about having them in different states towns etc.  Thank you in advance for any information or points of contact to gather this info.

I have never researched state laws, but every state I have fished tournaments in has required a permit. Some states do not charge a

fee for the permits, but require you to have them.

Permit required for CT--even 5 boats--if its a big tourney the organizer must pay $200 for A DEP officer to be there

The new rule this year is if there are more than a certain # of boats the coast guard must be present

I don't know why--Safety perhaps

In tennessee it is only if there is a money payout buy we have guys in the bushes during a big tourney looking for baskets and crap all the time especially during a tourney

I have no idea what the rule is in Florida.  I can't imagine they'd require a permit for a small club with 20-25 boats. Honestly if it were up to me, I wouldn't pay it if there was one. That's ridiculous. We already paid for fishing licenses and boat/trailer registrations.  And we're obeying all the laws and regulations.  Why should people have to pay more government fees just to fish together?   I could somewhat understand if it's 100+ boats, but not for small clubs.

Government beurocracy  :P

I know in Illinois and Michigan you need a permit to be legal. You can also get a permit in Illinois to decrease the size limit from 14" to 12." As far as guide lines relating to size or number of boats and money I have no idea.

However, in Michigan when lake associations start to get mad about the tournaments. All you do is call it a "contest" and you are in the clear. How this would hold up against the DNR I'm not sure but it works with the home owners.

What the heck is going on in Conn.??? DEP, Coast Guard????

In RI permits are free unless its in a city park and then the city sets the fee for a park use permit.
