All of the greats (regardless of the sport) have the ability to step up their game when it matters most.  He's the man!

Skeet had the best chance going into today. All he had to do was finish 4th or better, if he had done that it wouldn't have mattered what KVD did. Some will say that Skeet gave it to him but if you look at the weights, KVD came to win, and win he did.

This system makes zero sense to me. :-?

I'm with you. I suspect there will be some complaining from the Elite anglers about that format now that it's over....well, KVD might not say anything.  ;)

I think KVD would have won it with the other point system as well.  But, he indicated on that "other site" a few weeks ago that he didn't like the new system.

The guy is operating on a completely different level than anyone else.

Every tournament turns into all the other competitors VS. KVD.

There should be no more questions, he's the best tournament bass angler ever.

If someone says that I would have to say it is just sour grapes.  No way would Skeet "give away" the chance to win both AOY and the Classic in the same year.  Kudos to KVD.  What a finish!

I'm not big on the new "playoff" format either, but it is what it is.

Oh my God don't tell me that Skeet put back an eight pounder? Doubt it he just got beat.

No question, KVD is the man!!! But I read that Skeet came in 2nd with 277 points, not 6th.

2009 Bassmaster Angler of the Year Final Standings

By Vance McCullough

OK now that the dust has settled, here's how the point totals shake out:

1) 2009 AOY Kevin VanDam 283 points

2) Skeet Reese 277

3) Tommy Biffle 265

4) Mike Iaconelli 261

5) Randy Howell 248

6) Alton Jones 233

7) Kelly Jordon 232

8) Cliff Pace 224

9) Gerald Swindle 219

10) Gary Klein 217

11) Mark Menedez 215

12) Todd Faircloth 212

Over the course of a week Biffle made the most of his postseason opportunity by climbing to 3rd on the year. The only guys ahead him are the two we knew would be fighting for the trophy anyway. Biffle trailed Reese by 12 points and was only 18 points off the pace set by VanDam.

Iaconelli made major moves this week. He, along with Jordon and Howell performed well enough today to move Reese down the leaderboard and open the door for VanDam who absolutely took care of business on the River after faltering at Lake Jordan.

6th in the tournament,  not AOL.

Yes, 6th in the tournament caused him to be second in AOY.  If he had finished 4th or higher he would have won Angler of the Year.

Yeah, the standings I posted were the final standings from the last tournament, not final AOY standings.

KVD did great on the River. I wasn't blown away by the weights of the rest of the field. I figured that two other guys would be around 25lbs cause of the number of 2.5lb spots we have here.

That being said I loved the event and noticed some things.

1) KVD is still the man on top. nothing changing there

2) Ike is a class act and is great for the sport ( his first stop on day two was a ledge right in front of the blast off crowd...and he caught his whole limit there. The crowd loves it)

3) The elite series guys love to be close to each other. Of the twelve competitors, I know of four that were within sight of each other even disputing about holes. In the 50 or so miles of river available with 100s of shoreline miles to fish, I thought it would be a tournament where the gusy would be spaced out.

4) ESPN puts on a great show. I'm a fishing fan anyways so I loved the weighin 100% but ESPN also got the Zac Brown Band there so that others can enjoy the event and learn more about fishing that wouldn't have came without them.

KVD is a great if not the greatest angler, but this AOY was a joke. KVD was not the best over the whole season Skeet was. i figured it out under the old point system. KVD was just better for the last tournament. I just feel Skeet got beaten out of the AOY by ESPN more than by KVD.

Why does KVD stay so close to the top year after year???

Boys, KVD's approach is the same as the bass, always has, always will be for the most parts of the year,  find the FORAGE, find the bass.

Certainly is in a class by himself amoungst the current active pros.

2 classics and 5 AOY speak for themselves.
