Rage tail anaconda?

Featured Replies

What's your favorite way to fish the rage tail anaconda?

I was thinking it would do well if you reeled it just below the surface of the water making a wake.

I was thinking it would do well if you reeled it just below the surface of the water making a wake.

I've fished both the 7" and 10" (I think those are the lengths without looking).  I've fished them weightless and weighted.  And they sure don't make much of a wake.  The "fin" ungulates like that of an eel - it's not conducive to making much of a wake.   It will make a little bit of wake retrieved on the surfce, but not much.  Retrieved just under the surface, it doesn't make any wake that I've noticed.

I definately don't like them on the surface.  I think they loose some action.  I like fishing them on 1/4 oz pegged bullet weight and texpose rigged on a Matzuo 5/0 long shank offset worm hook.  On this rig on a slow retrieve I can keep them a foot or two under the surface.

If you want a Rage tail that make a wake, fish a weightless Toad or Space Monkey.

(BTW, the Space Monkey is my favorite Rage Tail.   Weightless you can buzz is like a frog across weeds/slop.  Weighted you can slow retrieve it under the surface.  It makes a helluva racket up top, though.  You can work it slower than the Toad.  I think it's legs have much more action than the toad at slow retrieve speeds.  I'll definately be loading up on more of these.)

For top water, use a 5/0 ewg and turn the Anaconda over so that the tail is turned down..... :)

Haven't tried top water yet.  Going to try that this weekend.

Later, :)

I rigged my first one that way on accident and tried it.  I found there's not a lot of difference than when it's rigged correctly.   IMO, it's a much better sub-surface lure.

does it really work on topwater?

I'm sure it will, but IMO it doesn't look very impressive up top.  I think there are much better choices for top water.  Like I said, the Rage tail Space Monkey is very easy to use on the surface and it produces a lot of action.

For those of you that have been able to find the new Rage Tails, are they catching fish, and are they proving better than other baits?

Of the new RTs, I've only tried the Anacondas and Space Monkey. I have, but haven't tried the others yet.

The Anacondas have been been a little productive for me, but not much. But I attribute that more to the fact that I got them after many parts of my favorite lake weeded up and became inaccessible, and that I prefer different baits at this point. So I will probably wait until next season before putting them to full use (at which time I expect them to produce well). Though I do plan to try the 10" on stripers this fall.

The Space Monkey has been very productive and I've caught several nice fish on them. Recently, they've become very effective in the late afternoon when worked through shallow water.

Are they more effective than other baits? If you are fishing them at the right time, I think they are. The actions exceed that of any other soft plastic to date, IMO. You have to see the actions to appreciate them. They really are more animated than anything I've seen before. Because they act so nicely in the water, I have confidence in them and that is key as well. Pick up a pack(s) and try them.

Well, it's not good to dispute the owner/ inventor of a bait, but I find the 10" Anaconda to be a "big bass" lure. Big O says they catch smaller fish, too.

When Ike visited Memphis I fished the Anaconda and picked up the three smallest fish I have caught on the bait (4, 3 and a 2). Otherwise, all the bass I have caught fishing this plastic have been 5 and better. If you don't have the patience for few bites and slow fishing this isn't for you. If you're after the biggest bass in the water you fish, then you have found the winning ticket!

I fish the Anaconda just like a big worm: Let it settle and sit for at least a minute, then lift the bait to about 10:00 and fall straight down on semi-slack line. Repeat, lifting the lure to 12:00 then let it sit again for at least thirty seconds, I leave it alone longer. All my bites have been while resting or on initial movement, I have not caught a fish on the fall or steady retrieve.

Gear:

Heavy Power/ Fast Action baitcaster; Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12; Gamakatsu 5/0 Offset Round Bend Hook; 1/4 oz bullet weight, unpegged; JJ's Magic or MegaStrike scent.

Hey RW does the scent help that much?  I have been thinking about picking some up.

No, I don't think so...but it doesn't hurt!

I think "attractants" or scent can make a fish hold the bait a little

longer and in the case of MegaStrike, acts as a lubricant. JJ's is

too messy for me to carry, so I pre-soak a few baits and put

them into a heavy, resealable package (Yamamoto or NetBaits).

MegaStrike, on the otherhand, is very user friendly and that's

my #1 recommendation.

Ever fish Toledo Bend's grass flats?  :)

17 floro is excellent on the Anacondas although some use lighter and many use much heavier lines. These are mainly designed for Tx rig and Carolina rig. Also standard weight used on Tx rigs are 1/4 to 1/2 oz.

Just as mentioned, this bait can be fished in many ways but I don't think top water is it's strong suit. Now swimming it weightless just under the surface real slow and pausing off and on over the moss and grass beds might cause arm and ligament damage. And on pause let it fall for a minimum of 5 sec. each time....

Remember 5/0 ewg min. on 10" and I advise superline hooks.

for me 17 pound test is light line 8-)

I love flippin and pitchin!

i have found the ragetail toad to be very effective fishing in light to heavy cover but one tip is that to make sure u rig the lure so that the nose is covering your hook at the tip because it snags up alot in weeds

for the anaconda i haven't caught anything on it yet, maybe when i get better or one of these fall weekends

Thats what is so awesome about the Rage Tail. Any of the products that I have used (so far only the first generation) can be used in any of the water columns and produce. The action these baits have allow the user to be very versatile.
