The bass strikes back

Featured Replies

Went fishing today with my buddy and all was normal, a bit slow but the bite was just starting to pick up when my buddy decided to go with his biggest confidence bait, a Rat-L-Trap. Second or third cast he gets his first bass in an hour and a half. It's barely hooked on the outside of the gill plate and in the mouth. He got it out of the gill plate and was going for the one in it's mouth when it thrashed pretty strong and BAM, the free treble hook is in his finger, just barely. He was trying to get it out when the fish thrashed twice again and it got buried in way past the barb and on the last thrash the fish managed to spit the hook and jump back into the water in one motion and I hear the longest, loudest string of cuss words I've ever heard.  ;D

Long story short, this is how it came out--

And the fishing trip was over and he spent hour in the emergency room. The fish definately came out on top today... but at least now he'll start listening to me about using pliers.  ;D

Strange thing is I just got back from fishing a couple hours ago and had the same thing happen to me. The sun was just starting to go down and I was throwing a torpedo topwater lure. I manage to bring in a small bass that was probably under a pound with one hook in the lip the other hook lose. I grab the fish to get the first hook out when he shakes and stabs me with the hook thats not in the fish. Then when the hook was still in my finger he thrashes some more. I managed to get the hook out of the side of my finger then out of the bass's mouth. It hurt badly but wasnt as bad as what your describeing here.

i had the same thing happen to me with a catfish. caught it on a top water and when i went to take it out it jumped all over aand i had a hook in my thumb. well the day just started and no way was i gunna let it ruin my day. i bit into a pillow and ripped it out barb and everything. worst pain ever but hey...i love fishing to much

The thing I find interesting about your comment is that you caught a catfish on a topwater lure. I have never hear of catfish takeing topwater lures before. I head them takeing spinner baits and swimbaits but not topwater lures. That is very strange.

nice work

You think that's good! Did you even look at the pic?

Geez, there is are very simple and effective ways to get hooks out even past the barb with a piece of line or string.

Here's a link:

Didn't know about those, but we tried just about everything we could think of to get it out. Would those techniques work with a treble hook though? We tried something similar to one of those pics but the other parts of the treble hook would start stabbing him in a different part of the finger  ;D

OUCH!  That really sucks.  At least it doesn't sound like there was any permanent damage and you were able to work on that insurance deductible a bit.   ;)

Yes, works with trebles.

I caught a 5lb channel cat tonight (on a worm) about 6-12 inches under the top in 15ft of water. I thought I had a monster bass until I got it to the boat :(

I've never been hooked past the barb either. I would probably try the string-yank method but I honestly don't know if I could get myself to do it. I know it's not supposed to hurt very much but I just can't get past the whole yanking a barbed hook out of your flesh thing....
