6 lb'er on ultralite

I was fishing one of my favorite developments 2 days ago when I lost one that I thought went about 7lbs.  I was using a 7'' Culprit red shad worm. My son had called my cell phone which I was answering when she hit about 3 feet from shore. I felt a little bump and did a half a@@, one handed set.  She jumped and came unbuttoned. Man was I upset.

Well, today I had to work day shift and got home about 45 minutes before the sun went down.  I was ready for a challenge so I grabbed my 7', med. spinning rod outfitted with a Shimano Stradic 2500 and 8# test mono.  I tied on my Lucky Craft Sammy and headed to my spot knowing she was still lurking in the shallows.  I chose the Sammy because I knew the top water explosion would be awsom if I could get her to hit and a good fight on lite tackle.

I threw along the bank towards the culvert pipe where she was at 2 days ago. 7 casts and nothing except one dink that swatted at Sammy. I turned and threw the opposite direction along the same shore.  On my 2nd cast I was retrieving Sammy when I paused for just a second.  BAM.  The explosion was like a M-80 being tossed into 6 inches of water.  I knew it was her as soon as she hit.  She did two wonderful acrobatic jumps for me before she headed to open, deeper water.  I'm telling yall that when she jumped, her entire body came out of the water.  Looked just like a Tarpon.  She tired out after a rather short fight and I landed her.

I don't believe she went 7 but I'll put $100 down that she was all of 6.

Oh yea, this was the first fish I caught on the Sammy.  I'm stoked

For that $100 I will accept check or money order.

Just kidding, a big bass on 8 pound line will always get your heart going.

OOOOPS. I forgot to say  "almost ultrlite."   Still fun though.

That is a HAWG. Anyway did you return it to the water and did it swim away ok? I notice there is blood comeing from that fish's gills. Anyway great catch.

Nice catch, now go out and buy a scale to weigh your fish they are not that expensive.

Great catch. Nothing like a topwater bite.  :)

yeeeeah buddy!  dat's what i be talkin' 'bout! ;D  AWESOME catch man - and on spinning too.  that always adds to the fun.  rock on!!!  i gotta try that soon. :)

Yes I returned it and she swam away just fine.  I C&R only.. I couldn't tell where the blood came from unless she swallowed the plug and worked its way loose during the fight.

Rondoef,

I have a scale.  Left it in the boat. I guess I need 2.

Everyone else,

Thanks for the Kudos.

Love dem long arm pix.

way 2 go dude

Yes, I wonder where the idea of ultralite came from.  8-) Nice fish, bro.

Topwater bite, 6 pounds +, spinning gear, and in December!! How cool is that? Great fish man. ;)

Similar story but I was using 4 pound line when she hit my one-inch white grub on a #1 gold hook at my feet as I was reeling in.

Heart stopping and a lot of stress ensued until I let her play out and got her on shore.

Congrats for experienceing one of life's greatest moments --- catching a large bass on light tackle.

Now, if you can find a river holding smallmouth you can do the same with four pound line and have a great time.  Those smallies can really fight.

Awesome, man, great fish and even better on light line. Nice reel as well, got one of them myself.

Nice fish.

I too use a 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action rod saddled with a 2500 series Shimano as my main soft plastics rig. It's "Medium", not light and certainly not ultra light. In addition to a few brown and green bass, this outfit handles 20+ lb stripers, cats, buffalo and drum. Your rig might not be exactly the right one for big baits, heavy or deep diving lures and some other techniques, but it can handle any size bass when the conditions are favorable.

nice fish bassin. avids 7 pounder sure looks a lot bigger than that 6. im with the other guy that says bring a scale.

way to go bb! I bet that's a 6lber all day. solo shots have alot of difficulty showing the true size of a fish, bocabasser.

congrats on the trophy! :)

Very nice fish there. must be nice to catch them like that in December  ;D

Great fish Bassin' . Yeah, those retention ponds can hold some nice fish. It's a good thing they clean the bottoms when they dig them, 'cause if they had much wood in them at all, I'd probably lose a lot of fish.

Way to go. Keep em coming.

then i guess it must be if you say it is.

there are a LOT of developments around where i live all with decent little ponds or small lakes...never once have i thought about fishing them. Cant wait for spring now! :P
