New PB..Guess the weight?

Featured Replies

I caught a new PB last night... I didn't have a scale because I was beating the bank and only brought a small tackle bag. It measured 24"...and was healthy and fat. For a northern bass this girl is pretty big.

Any guesses on its weight? I am not very good at guessing big fish weights.

I know the pic isn't the greatest because I was alone and only had my phone.

It was on a custom painted 1/8th bullet jig dressed with a 5" green GYCB green twin tailed hula grub.

Ain't gonna guess but that in definitely a slob, nice catch! 8-)

I'd say 8.5lbs.

Quick way to get close to the weight (with smallmouths anyway, largemouths are usually a little heavier):

Length x length x length / 1600

So 24 x 24 x 24 / 1600 = 8.24 then I added a bit and got 8.5  :P

Nice fish! I'm guessing 6-8

yep that looks like a 6 pounder to me.  Probably 6lb 4oz.  If she had a big belly then you would've had an 8 pounder in your hands.  Anyways congrats on the catch.

On here I'd say 7# or a fat 24 incher! in Real life I'd call it 10 to sound good to the neighbors, wife, fishing buds etc. They'll never know the difference. I think weights are multiplied by 2 at least in my area (so to stay relative to them I just use the same formula  ::) ). People say they've been catching 5# fish usually you see a picture and it is at best 2-3# and the " 2# " fish are usually under the legal size!

Either way, you can call it what you want you will not be lying! I measured a 22" fish for a guy fishing with me and it was 6.5# probably a little fatter than yours as it was during the spawn and the pond produces hefty fish (even the little ones have guts!).

Nice fish either way you call it.... I'd love to have something like that under my belt. bet you had a fun time with it! How'd she fight?

I think some of the guesses are pretty generous IMO. It's so hard to tell from pics, but that bass doesn't look too thick to me. I can't see it being over 6 1/2, my guess would be 5 and change.

My guess is 5-7lbs, Great fish!! ;)

I'd have to agree with this guess or maybe a tad heavier.

Great catch all the same. As you show the picture around, tell people the water in the lake dropped 1 foot when you hauled this toad out.  ;)

Here's my guess on the weight--after careful scrutiny and loads of thought put into it I've come up with the official weight of HEAVY!!!  Nice fish indeed.  Fish on, John.

My guess is 6-7 lb.

I thought the formula was length x length x girth / 1200 ? Girth plays the biggest part of a large fishes weight. Not trying to argue, just letting you know a different or possibly better formula. :P Maybe that formula you listed will suffice if girth measurement is not available.

Nice fish dude! Looks to be at least 7 lbs with that kind of length.

I'd say 8.5lbs.

I just looked in my old Infishermen book I have (smallmouth bass secrets, its OLD). It's listed as Length x Length x Length / 1600... but again, it's a smallie formula... who knows, I'd think you would have to add in the girth also to get a good result (a 12 inch fish thats super fat is obviously going to weigh a lot more than a super skinny 12 incher)...

Stupid math! Stay out of fishing!  :P
