Jig, Worm or Tube

Anyone read this week's featured article? It's worth a read, but I have a little different take on the subject. Now, they're the pros and I'm not, so you probably ought to go with what they say, but...

My strong suit is soft plastics. What I have found is that distinct action and a different profile perform on certain days and at particular lakes and ponds. I break it down this way: In shallow water (<12') I generally fish a Senko or Fat Ika weightless regardless of the season, cover or structure. For deeper water I like weighted Kreatures, tubes, Hula Grubs and Kut-Tail. That's not to say I don't ever fish weighted presentations in shallow water, I do, just not often. Another weighted presentation I like is a C-rigged lizard, but I fish this bait much differently and on heavier equipment.

I fish these techniques year around and that's my point: These lurers work all year, I've never noticed any seasonality. I'm still a work-in-progress with jigs, but again, I think it's all about the right spot or situation, not the time of year.

If the fish are snappin' I have to go with the jig.  I just can't be bothered messing with soft plastics and such at a fall rate of 1 inch/second if the fish are willing to inhale a 1/2 oz. jig.  Mind you if the bite becomes horribly slow...its senko time.

First plastic I go to for fishing shallow cover is a tube. I have the most confidence in them over any other plastic although creature baits come in a close second. I've been working on getting worms into my line up but I'm still building up my confidence in them but I find them coming into play more in deeper water. Jig, unfortunately, I have the least amount of confidence in. The think next season, I'll tie them on more often to build up my confidence in them!

basser89,

Try the Fat Ika, they have produced the majority of my big largemouth bass this year. As the summer warmed up I found myself going to a tube, specifically Micro Munch Tackle's El Gordo, black neon (black with red flakes). In deeper water I prefer a weighted lure, but <12', the Fat Ika rules.

It's the second featured article on the BassResource home page (what comes up when you access the site):

New!  Jig, Worm or Tube

I have had a lot of luck on some watermelon tubes. That is my goto bait if nothing else is biting. I went out on a river right next to me & i caught several over 3lbs. on that tube in the back creeks & streams.

Will do RoadWarrior! How to you rig them? What type of situations do you look for when you throw them? Thanks!

I've had a lot of success casting jig/pig for bigger than average bass.I like to fish it deep.I like pitchin' 4" tubes in watermelon and salt and pepper, weightless.I'll fish a T-rigged worm most any place, and I really like to fish a 3x lizard(watermelon,pumpkin/chartruese,black w/blue tail) on a C-rig.The 3x really floats up above the brass weight.

The point I was making is that jigs, worms and tubes work year around depending on the conditions you are fishing. They are not always the right choice on any particular day, but they might be at any time of year.

I have to agree with you that they work year round.  When in doubt I throw a jig.  In all reality 90% of my fishing is jigs.  When its cold or real weedy I will throw a tube.  I have tons of worms but just dont throw them much.
