There are two urban lakes by my house that I feel like trying this weekend. I have scouted both, one is an 8-10 acre hole with 3 or four "deep" (maybe 10 feet) pockets and a small floating aluminum dock and the other is a much larger lake with an average depth of 13 feet. It also has large, cylinder shaped concrete pillars (reinforcement for an overpass) at certain portions of the lake. The small lake is clear water and the large lake is a dark stain. Each have concrete banks and no other structure in the water (that I am aware of).

Any ideas on how to fish these lakes? I have always fished water with adequate structure so I am a little in the dark.

Structure: Geologic in nature, structure is any change in the on the bottom of a lake or river. IT may be a drop-off, rock pile, hump, hole, saddle, ledge, flat, channel trace, etc.)

Cover: Cover consists of weeds, trees, branches, tulles, buck brush, stick-ups, rocks and man-made objects like docks, tires, etc. Cover is often confused with structure. The difference is cover is not geologic in nature. You can also have cover on structure. An example of this would be stick-ups (cover) on top of a hump (structure).

I would use suspending type lures/techniques such as Carolina Rig, Drop Shot, Wacky Rigs ect.

i tend to work with somethig that is fast when fishing these types of waters. by using "fast" baits i am (trying) to find the fish much faster, and eliminate to dead spots. maybe rat-l-traps would work for you? also, maybe some deep divers 10+ crankbaits to get to those deeper pockets and drop offs... one of my favs for this are poe's super cedar crankbaits.

With the depths you have described, I would work weightless soft plastics. Specifically, a Senko and/or Fat Ika.

Try throwing a Rapala Husky Jerk in the clear lake and a jig in the Stained water. Since you dont say where you live, I will assume that the water is fairly cold. Fish them slow around the structure you can see.

It is a physical impossibility for a lake not to have STRUCTURE, it may be devoid of cover but it can never be devoid of structure, poor in structural features yes, no structure ----> IMPOSSIBLE.

Interesting....I never thought of that. We've always called anything in the water that isnt a fish "structure".  Its amazing what I learn on BR!

Don't forget to pay attention to the wind, sun and barometric pressure when you go.
