new to largemouth.

Featured Replies

I fish a lake called sleepycreek lake in west virginia and i cant seem to catch fish consistently at this lake. I believe that the new state record for largemouth is in this lake. Ive caught a 7 pounder out of this lake on shiners so I know they are in there. I fish mainly for smallies so the largemouth is new territory for me. the lake is pressured a lot. So my question is do i throw normal sized baits keep throwin them and dont change or should i size down? Any advice would help.

Upsize!

Big baits catch big fish. If you want to catch some big largemouth, focus on soft plastics and jigs.

On the otherhand; Why waste your time fishing for green trout if smallmouth are an option?

Another WV boy!  I haven't personally fished Sleepy Creek, but I have heard anglers say that there are some large bass there.  I believe there are also some pike there, but I can't confirm that.  I would first try your hand at some senkos fished weightless, and after you tap into some bass, then do what RW said and upsize.  Try some larger baits and naturally some larger fish will follow.

Where else in WV do you fish?

just like these guys said upsize give them something that looks exactly like what they are eating. the biggest bass i ever caught i wasnt even really bass fishing. i was catching bream in a lake and i reeled one in and there was a whopper of a bass chasing it trying to catch it. that fish just kept doing that every time i would catch a bream. i fianally caught a smaller one and put him on my big reel and threw out towards the middle to get him tired. sure enough next bream i caught here came mr. bass weel i horsed that bream to the boat turned around grabbed the other reel and skipped that little bream across the lake. got him backt to the boat tossed him in front of the bass and he disapeared then i just held on. the fish weighed 8lbs 7ounces. so just upsize and go natural my friend.

I have to agree on that one.  :)

I'm with Roadwarrior on this one. I would continue to fish for the smallies, they are much more fun to battle.
