Some bass are dumb

Featured Replies

Bass are so dumb somtimes!!!  :(

I recently hooked a bass and had him on for like 5 seconds till he jumped and got off.  Then I cast right back where he was with the same bait(tube bait) and caught him.  On the same outing, I caught a bass that weighed exactly two pounds.  Then about 30 minutes later my friend caught the same bass on the same bait I was using.  Im pretty sure it was the same fish because it was in the same spot and weighed exactly the same.  That is not the only time ive caught the same fish multiple times.

Some more examples of bass being dumb;

-Ive caught bass right after spooking them off the bank

-My friend caught a bass on a dandilion

-I caught a bass on a crappie nibble

-We have all caught 3 inch bass on 5 inch lures.

I guess I nead to find some florida strain bass....

Does any one else have any storys of bass doing not so smart things?

I dont think bass are smart only becuase there brians are way more adjusted for feeding and breeding then a humans brain i think thats what makes up most of there brain eating and mating.Your lure to him was food at the beginning and the end no matter  they dont comprehend when out of the water that they can die fast all they do is flip like they are swimming not  as if they are tryin to get back in but instinctivly

Sounds like you are catching fish that are bedding.  Same fish will take a bait 3 or 4 times in a row if it's a threat to the nest.  Much more a natural instinct to protect it's offspring than being "dumb" though.

Yeah, they were spawning bass.  I relize that bass can't actualy think the way we do and were just acting off of there instincts.  These insticts are what help them survive somtimes and other times makes them easier to catch.

Im pretty sure the 2 pounder I was talking about was not spawning.  This is because he was out about 4 feet deaper than the ones that were spawning. This gives him no escuse for getting fooled by the same bait twice in an hour.

All bass are dumb.

They just outsmart us alot.

Sometimes you can set one in the water and it will just stay there.  One time I set one in the water after catching it and it would not stop swimming to shore even after pointing it in the right direction.  I think they just swim in straight lines after you release them.  Never caught one on a stringer though, I guess its hard for them to eat with a string hangin out their gills.

Bass are dumb?

We are the ones out spending thousands of dollars and countless hours trying to catch them...then when we do catch them we throw them back..... ask 99% of women who is looked on as the dumb one -  the bass or the man :)

The fish may not be able to graduate from high school or hold a full-time job, but they do know how to survive and that is what makes it fun to hunt and catch them.

I think bass are smart in their own way and that is why I agree...we pay thousands of dollars to try to find and catch them and then we throw them back.

I have always said bass are smarter than us and I still stand by that statement, in a bass sort of way. :)

I caught a small bass using a bare hook, bobber, and the tab from a coke can.

The big ones are anything but dumb though... they dont weigh 10 lbs because they are stupid.

the smartest fish is the cutthroat trout with an IQ of 2.

I've been skunked more than once in this life.

Who's dumb now?   ;D

Bass fishing is the art and science of trying to outwit a creature with a brain the size of a peanut - what makes it interesting is that they win more often than not. ;)

I agree with LBH and the others that the fish were probably spawning. But I also read or heard it on a fishing show somwhere that each one of the bass's eyes has it's own separate memory.for example the right eye knows that it just took a swipe at that white spinnerbait but the left doesn't know the right eye has already seen it when you throw it back again.I think the point they were making had something to do with making multiple casts to a fishy looking spot.Makes me wonder does one side of his lip have a separate memory from the other, lol?

i know this is about bass, but here top this one:

We were at our resort at table rock lake, so my grandpa wanted to set a trot line for some catfish. So I went along and helped him. We got the trot line in, and it was noon and about 98 degrees, so we decided to come back and bait it later on that night....well when the boat pulled up to the line, and i grabbed it, i felt this tremendous tug...well it turned out that a 7 pound channel catfish bit a plain hook..

I dont no , i thought it was pretty funny.

Long ago, a partner of mine, after a considerable amout of working at it, managed to land a pumpkinseed on a cigarett butt.  8-)

A psycology lesson on fish.

All fish lack the ability of conscious thought. They are unable to think in the past or future, only present, and cannot consider the consequences of their actions. They simply act. Fish can be conditioned to respond in a certain way (ie they've seen the same lure before) but they cannot recall an incident, only a positive, negative or passive emotion. Like humans, fish can only concentrate on one main point at a time. Unlike humans, fish cannot cycle between points very quickly, and they rely on environmental changes to shape their desire (ie they spawn at a certain temperature, or move with a certain wind).

Talked to a biology major for that one  ;)

That's pretty common..

Every time I get a bite, or hook one that gets off, I cast RIGHT BACK same spot, and gett'm to bite 75% of time.

????????

Yeah, he just had a plain hook and a dandilion and caught about an 8 inch bass.  It was a pond where there are too many bass and they are all small.

Thats cool that bass can become conditioned to a certain bait even though they can't recall past expeiriences.  Im not sure if I fully understand this but I guess it doesnt matter.

I doubt that is true....

kinda reminds me of "let not your left hand know what thy right hand doeth"   ;D

This first fish I ever caught was on a hook w/o any bait. I was very young and I guess my parents got tired of putting new bait on my hook because I was playing around with the pole and knocking off the bait. They said oh don't worry about it you don't need bait to catch a fish thinking that would keep me content for a while. Next thing they know I'm going nuts cause I've got a fish on. Guess what kind of fish that was.

Here is an interesting tid bit:  The lake I fish has been around for some time and it was known to produce some huge fish on a rattle trap.  So for YEARS people fished rattle traps and caught tons of huge fish.  When we bought our camp at this lake I had no clue about the history of it, and I went to by some rattle traps from the local baitshop.  The owner looked at me like I was crazy and said "Don't sell many of these anymore..." and proceeded to tell the story.  Apparently most of the fish had become conditioned to the noise that a rattle trap makes and had learned not to strike them!

PS

Notice the name of the lake is not included, thats because the Rattle Trap bite is back and I don't want other people to start figuring it out!!!! lol

I like that one.

just a measure of general fish intelligence, below are 2 pics of rigs I make for bluefish.  These are finished products and will catch fish repeatedly till the wire leader shreds.
