Fish and cows

Featured Replies

I live in a some what rual area... we have alot of cows. Growing up driving pass a cow pasture if the cows where all up eating, Dad would say it was a good time to go fishing... for if the cows are eating the fish and deer are too. I think this has something to do with the major and minor feedings of the day. Can anyone elaborate?

I have found that I catch more fish if the cows are up and grazing than if they are just laying there chewing cud. :)

Thanks in advance for your input!

my wifes step dad says the same thing...along with "if the moon is out and the water is slick, the fishin aint no good"

Jenny,

Last year I was on a bicycle ride from Calvary, GA to Climax, GA.  We passed a pasture full of cows all lying down and I commented to my buddy, Carl, that my Dad always said that if the cows were lying down the fish weren't biting.

"Yeah," Carl said.  "My Daddy said the same thing.  If we were going fishing and the cows were lying down, we would get out and throw rocks at 'em to get 'em up so the fish would start biting."

My partner always talks about the cows standing or lying down. I can always find one or two standing.   ::)

WOW!!!!  This is something that I have never heard of.  I guess it is true that you learn something new every day.

Now when I see cows I'm not gonna say "MOOOOOOOO!", but "Let's go fishing", thats if they are up and eating.  ;)

Thanks,

Alfred

my fishing pardnor says the same thing,  but fishing is so bad around east kentucky,   we could not prove or disprove this theory

Yea my dad use to say the same thing. So now when I'am going fishing and

I pass cows laying down I just jump out of the truck and fire off a couple rounds

to get them moving again. Then I just head on fishing. ;D

My grandfather used to say the same thing and from what I saw it was true. It has kinda helped me keep my job too.  If cows are up and eating--I can find an excuse to get off early.  I just always hope they are standing up on tournament mornings, but it usually to early and dark to tell.

See now I always heard if they are laying down, rain is coming.  If rain is coming, I'm making my way to the lake!

Cows are up and 2 fish were brought in ALL WEEK!!  I think the BASS were laying down, not the cows!

I fished my friend's pond in Page County, Virginia and his cows use the pond for cooling off and drinking.

Talk about some beautiful bass in a pond.

I remember fishing and hearing a splash and at the other end of the pond three cows were entering the pond to cool off.  They paid no attention to me although they seemed to be watchful of what I was doing.

Did it stop the fish from biting? Nope.  No impact on the bass or bream whatsoever.

I wonder if those cows were potty trained?

The one certainty I have observed when the cows are feeding is the grass got shorter and the cow pucks increased.

There are now cows were I live anymore.  All the land is developed.  Anyone have a internet link to a camera showing cows.  Preferably standing up. :)

All I know about cows is that they taste real good fresh off the bar-b-Q.

I just couldn't pass up a thread with this title.

Gotta love it.

It has to do with barometric pressure. Certain activity with BP causes wildlife to be active, including bass. Unfortunately there are times when the cows, or wildlife are active, but you might not catch fish. That could be a result of fishing the wrong location, depth and/or maybe the presentation. It also could come from many of the other factors under water that shuts the fish down at that time. That's one of the reasons why BP guidelines are not 100%.
