does anyone know where a good place to catch bass is in the early spring season? i usually do mid summer fishing and im new to early season fishing

staging places such as flats and points

Look for transition areas.  how it works is Bass will move from deep to shallow so look around drop offs when water gets to around 50-60 degrees.  Work with crankbaits and jerkbaits in these areas.  and good luck.

Cranks all day til they move up. Bout 10-15 ft. from the shoreline.

When: early pre-spawn

Where: main lake points 10-15' of water

Technique: reel keeping the trap a couple of feet below the surface and bounce it off wood.

When: pre-spawn

Where: feeder creek channels 10-15' of water

Technique: make a long cast, let the trap free fall to the count of 10, kneel on the deck, sticking 1 ½ to 2' of your rod tip in the water and slowly reel.

When: slightly before spawn

Where: feeding/spawning flats 3 to 5' of water

Technique: slow roll like you would spinner baits

When: post spawn

Technique: reverse the first three

I prefer Bill Lewis' Rat-L-Traps in either ½ oz Red Chrome or Gold/Black Back/Orange Belly.

You wouldn't think they would be up in the shallows but you'd be surprised.

At Grand a few weeks ago the water temp was 45-50 degrees, looked like chocolate milk, and was wind blown. I still managed to pull a 2-10 fish out of a bush up 4 feet from the bank  :-?

Today, my 2nd day out for bass here in Michigan..

1st day was yesterday, same place but yesterday there was still ice on about 20% of the water. I caught -0-.

today... ice was gone and I worked a shad rap ( crank type bait )

from the bank where I could see a drop off..

Caught 4 fish..in about 20 minutes..

one was 3# 2 oz.. the crank bait was on when the sun was out.

as soon as the sun went away, I never had a nother bite ? tried for about another hour with Soft plastics and the same shad rap.

noth-in.. but that 20 minutes was so awsome,, after a long winter..

ready to fish.. !!!!

Rocky shores have been the ticket for me.  They hold the heat and make excelent cover.  Try square billed cranks, suspending jerk baits (I prefere X-Raps) and texas rigged craws.
