It isn't.

I think maybe because it is just you versus a creature with it's own agenda that is always changing. Catching fish is exciting not catching fish is booorrrriiinnnggg. Driving my boat is exciting, sometimes the only exciting part of the day.

I have to agree that it may be because it is you and the fish,

I would say because it is the human nature to be a predator and not many things in life allow people to experience this anymore

It is more exciting for several reasons:

1. it involves less sweating

2. you can sit down while you do it

3. you can eat while you do it

4. it does not involve running

Fishing ain't exciting - it's easy -- all you have to do is the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place :

Because you do not have to worry about a 7' 3" 350 pound lineman charging you.

I think its because the sport is always changing. nothing is ever cut and dry, the fish could be in one place one day and hitting one lure and the next day they could be doing something completely different.

Thats why I find it exciting, its always a puzzle to me

I think there are more heartaches and frustrations in fishing than in traditional sports which make the successful times even better. But I still think it is just as fun as hockey state championships.

To my mind, fishing & hunting are THEE traditional American sports.

I well remember when Thanksgiving morning found most nimrods

in their favorite coverts gunning for pheasant, quail, grouse, rabbit & woodcock.

It was a powerful tradition even in New Jersey, the most populated state in the union.

Speaking for myself, I have very little interest in the couch-potato sports.

I suppose that makes me an egoist, because I'd rather be IN the game than WATCHING the game.

More eloquently put, I prefer participant sports to spectator sports

I agree. I'd say 99% of the time, fishing can't compare to trying to stretch a double into a triple, squeezing a bunt to score the go ahead run, sacking a QB or draining a 3 pointer in the 4th quarter...

(I say 99% of the time, the other 1% is landing a 15-20lber.)

Are we discussing excitement or desirability?  I desire to fish more than any other sport.  If I hook a hawg then the excitement rises to fever pitch, similar to hanging on the edge at that last shot that beats the buzzer, or that last "Hail Mary" pass that wins the game.  But when I'm not hooking a hawg the feelings I get from fishing are more desirable to me than the feelings I get from other sports.  I feel one with nature which is a rather pleasant euphoria.  

I think that when I was younger, I probably enjoyed playing football and baseball as much as fishing.  But, truthfully, I really can't remember.

I guess fishing is more exciting for me because I am actually competing if you consider it a sport.  I really love watching football and NASCAR.

I cried when my Broncos finnaly won a Supper Bowl. But when I first caught my PB 4.5 lb. bass I felt like I got off of a roller coaster.

Man is a "hunter" as opposed to women who is a "gatherer."

Since the caveman age, man has always been a hunter.  Men are the providers for their families.  Men rule over the animals and all living things on the planet.

What makes fishing "exciting" is that it is man against animal.  An animal in a totally foreign environment.  An animal that has instincts that overrule habits.

An animal with a brain the size of a quarter, but one that outsmarts the most intelligent animal on the planet, man.

What makes fishing exciting is when you outsmart the fish.  When you can use your thoughts, learning, training and instincts to locate the enemy and then capture it.

All the planning, equipment, time, energy and expense of hunting the fish comes to a fruitful success when you set the hook and put the animal in the boat or on shore.

That is what makes fishing exciting.  The thrill of outsmarting an animal in the animal's environment.  To show the animal that man still rules the planet.

Now, go to Bass Pro Shop and spend $1,000 on tackle and gear; buy a $25,000 bass boat and a $30,000 truck to pull it; pay $125 for gas for the boat and truck; purchase insurance on the boat and truck for another $700 a year; pay the $8 launch fee; wear $100 in fishing clothes; go out and find that fish in the sun or rain; catch him; and then throw him back.

So who is the smart one in the above senerio????? ;D

But it is exciting.

For me it's because at 50 I can still fish,but I can't block 21 year old 6'5,305 D-linemen anymore!

Because it is kind of like life itself. Just when you think you have everything figured out, you have just began.

Double DITTO to what Sam so eloquently said!! On a comical note: I like/agree with ablefisher's insight on the subject:o) True, there are numerous sports that lead to exciting moments but I find most of them boring most of the time (especially sans brewskies). When I'm fishing, the anticipation of what the next cast may bring is mesmerizing and addicting. Maybe that's why the old "just one more cast" is such a favorite phrase/thought for a lot of us.

Idk about you but if i finished up having sex and smelled like fish I'd go see a doctor asap

With most sports you are competing against other athletes in the same environment, you know their limitations; you know their limited field of play. Regardless of conditions all sports are all controlled by rules and regulations so there are no guessing just hard facts.

But with fishing you are competing in their environment. Bass know the lake structure better than you; they know their environmental conditions better than you, they know what it takes to make them strike better than you. With all of our advanced technology available today we are still making educated guesses at best.

Everybody that fishes does it for multiple and personal reason's.

In fishing, there are some days when the zero gets posted and you still found satisfaction from  within the day.

Some days its catching them, and some days, its "to restorith the soul"
