Shallow water the problem??

Featured Replies

I havent been catching too many bass this season. ( one LMB a day is great. ) I have only been able to fish from shore.. I know there are plenty of bass in this water and plenty BIG bass at that. I see alot of movement/ jumps very far out. I didnt realize how far out the water stayed shallow there until I saw a guy yesterday in waders walk about 40 feet out!! Is all this shallow water the reason why my bass count Isnt high?? I know the tackle Isnt the problem because I've caught bass there on almost everything in my box.  :-/

I suspect the shallow water is the problem.

Try to find an area with transition or a

drop-off, point or hole.

Structure is the key.

It's all about the same depth all the way around. The spot is actually a resevoir..I know it's pretty deep in the middle, but havent been able to get my kayak out due to driver's license issues.  :'( Maybe I'll get some waders like the other guy lol. He caught a few!!

I shore fish every evening.  I am still catching them in shallow water.  The Grass is real think right now, and most of my hits are within 5 feet from the shore.  I got a 5 pound 4 ounce bass at 11:15 Sunday morning in less then 5 feet of water while it was in the mid 80's.  I find the big ones still right at the pipes where any water is flowwing into the lake from the neighborhood.

water is from 2" to 2 1/2 ft from shore to about 40-50 ft out. (atleast)

Sounds simple but anywhere where rocks meet grass, two different grasses or pads meet, stumps or trees in the water, and SHADE, (the forgotten structure!!) etc.

I caught some nice ones this past weekend right at the edge of lily pads in less than a foot of water, which was around 83". These pads were easier to throw to from shore than boat, so.......

Good luck!!!

Put on a pair of old shoes and some swim trunks and walk on out.  As long as the water is warm, you shouldn't need waders anyway.

Yeah but I'd rather get bit by a snapping turtle with waders on atleast haha  ;)

Slow your presentation down a lot when you are fishing a low water area. Patience is a virtue (can't spell) but take your time if you rush to much you will get mad and give up.... at least that is what I do. haha ;D ;D ;D

man i feel your pain, ohio shallow water bass fishing can be rough this time of year.    weather paterns up north here change so much, and the bass seem to me to be more tempermental the shallower they live.      I know what you mean about the depth a long ways out too. theres a local lake  that i have barely fished but if you know the waters as well as some people do, and you count your steps just right, you can almost walk out into the middle of this lake and its only up to your waist.....

heres my approach, i shore fish in a small natural muddy lake, where the water slowly rolls off to a max depth of 10ft.     but i fish the shore religiously. while im horrible at hooking up, i get tons of strikes on topwaters really shallow....... if that bites off i switch to small presentation finese baits, small shakey and trick worms are my favorite, but ive been doing well with whacky rigging some really random baits too.    I LOVE whacky rigging lifelike minnow style stick baits and tossing them along shallow pads and things like that. it gives a really realistic look of a baitfish dying.

water clarity is the big diff for you tho. mylake almost always has chocolate brown water.     so i have to fight to get my bait noticed.   let me know how it works, alot of these guys fish southern impoundments. and this little northern lakes with these little bass are a whole different world.         let me know what works, ill try it on my home lake sometime.

hey, with no gators around.  id be wading!
