Anyone make their own fish attractant?

Recommended Posts

Been messing around in the kitchen, actually quite by accident.  Cleaning out the refridgerator the other day I came across some minced garlic, I also had a new near can of vaseline.  Well long story short I put the garlic in the food processor, and also the vaseline (don't ever do that, the wife doesn't like vaseline in the food prossessor), kept adding vaseline until the mixture was what I thought was good.  End result went fishing today, we have had 10 days of rain straight, awful cold front low last night was around 38.  The water temps have dropped, etc, etc, I figured the fishing would be terrible, I was right, but I wanted to experiment with my mix, end result the only fish I caught had the vaseline mixture on.  I know it is way less than scientific, but I would love to think that my attractant was responsible for helping me land the fish.  The fish all inhaled the rubber lizard, and were hooked deep in the mouth, so I figured from that, that the scent was helping.  Anyway does anyone make their own attractant?

I stuffed some tubes with a little minced garlic last year.  Results were weak but I think it was more the Zoom tubes than the garlic.  I don't like their tubes at all.   I debated the same thing with coffee but never got around to it.  The garlic can't hurt much but not sure if vaseline is a good thing to have in the water.  Since it's petroleum based it's scent might put off the fish as well.

C'mon...

A tube of MegaStrike or a couple of bottles of JJ's Magic will last an

entire year. Both products are VERY effective. I really think

you are miles ahead with these attractants.

It is just about doing something to make the fishing more enjoyable to me.  I guess it is sorta like the fly fisherman who ties their own flies, sure you can buy them, but there is some satisfaction in doing it yourself.  BTW I have a tube of megastrike, and it was JJ's magic that gave me the idea for mincing up the garlic, cause that stuff stinks, and so does the stuff I mixed up.  Just having some fun.

I use attractants for two purposes first as a lubricant because I fish in grass a lot and the attractant helps my plastic baits slide through easier.  I use Fish Formula II or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of pure anise oil added; this is to mast any odor my plastic may have pick up.

Vaseline and LC crayfish scent.(not giving out the secrets to the whole recipe)

I make it in a spaghetti sauce jar.If you take a good whiff of it,it'll smell like that jar is having a crayfish party. It's that strong.

Since i've used it twice i haven't skunked out yet, they seem to be holding it a little longer allowing me to set the hook late...lol

I've really lost my confidence in garlic base scents since I never see the difference in hook up rate or the bass "hold time".It's almost like they despise that stuff here. :-/

Hmmmm, all these "inventors" got me to thinking.

First it was to save the grease from cooking bacon.  It will set up like vaseline, but that will turn rancid.

The suggestion of Crisco was interesting.

So, why not a plain old piece of salt pork.  It's greasy, salty, and an animal product as opposed to either a vegetable or petroleum based substance.

Rub it between the thumb and index finger until they are good and greasy, then apply.

Salt and fat combined.  How good is that?

How 'bout a hot dog, or a sausage?

Gotta run.  Off to the market.  Then to the lab......., I mean pond.

Here is why I chose vaseline, lard will melt when hot, crisco the same, even Megastrike gets somewhat runny when sitting on the hot deck, but more like vaseline than a animal fat.  I AM NOT SAYING THE MEGASTRIKE HAS PETROLEUM JELLY IN IT.

Here is another idea I came up with today, how about fish oil supplements?  The liquid jells or even codliver oil, mixed with some vaseline?  I think I need to check that out.

Now you're thinking.  Fish oils in a spray bottle, or small brush applicator like that for fingernail polish, why not?

Maybe I'll soak my salt pork in the fish oil.  Gotta be something they'll like in that smorgasboard of scents and flavors.

I'd rather spend the time out fishing than trying to re-create the wheel of two products that work awesome!

Somebody probably asked JJ why he wasn't out fishing rather than tinkering with that stinky stuff.

There is always a better mousetrap out there somewhere.  Finding it is called progress.

The pointed stick worked just fine as a fish gathering tool in its day, or so they thought.  Still does in some cultures.

Different strokes for different folks.

I have been known to mix powder garlic and a bit of water in a zip lock bag then soak lures in it.
