How to fish underwater structure

Featured Replies

When I go out on my boat,I normally dont bother to watch my Fishfinder as Im not all that good at deciphering things.

However on this last trip I found a spot where the depth quickly dropped from 17ft to 30ft,like a drop off.

I was puttering around and gound a huge hump as well,I made a mental note of these 2 places by looking at what was on the bank(trees, rock formations)

I was wondering how I should approach these 2 spots,How to fish them and what would be the best lures to throw.

On the hump,do I cast past it and then work my way up the one side and down the other?

And on the dropoff,do I start in the shallow area and allow my bait to fall off the edge,or do I try to find the start and end of the ledge and fish perpendicular in the deep area of the dropoff?

Does anyone know of any tutorial or website that will expalin how to fish structure better?

Catt to the thread, Catt to the thread!

for the drop off, throw spinnerbaits, jigs, spoons and some deep diving crankbaits. fish parallel to the drop so you don't move fish off the structure.

for humps throw some jigs, spinnerbaits and crankbaits. fish the whole structure. make sure you didn't miss a angle. also move around a bit. these structures are great for hot weather and post spawn fish.

if your fishing a jig let if fall of the ledge and went it hits the bottom retrieve all the way back to the boat.

when fishing a spinnerbait throw it shallow and when it goes of the ledge fish it fast and erratic like its running from a dominant predator

Catt will probably explain a lot to you, and inevitably refer you to this site: http://www.buckperry.com/.  I read Buck many years, and it was invaluable.

I'm sure Catt has most of the answers, however if you are interested in learning to use your electronics effectively you may want to buy Don Ionino's book. Http://www.iovino.com/donbook.htm

This book is written by a hall of fame bass fishermen who knows how to fish outside underwater structure as well as anyone.

Deep structure bass are the same as shoreline bass, except you are fishing targets you can't see. Once you understand how to locate bass on deeper structure, and boat control to stay near the structure, catching them isn't all that different.

Good luck.
