How big is my bass?

Featured Replies

I caught this the other night fishing a rage tail shad for the first time. I didn't have my scale in my bag of course like I do every single other time I don't catch a big bass! I believe this fish to weigh between 5 and 5.25 pounds, because it's a good bit bigger than a confirmed 4 pounder I caught 2 weeks ago. Sorry for the crappy pic (camera phone). Bear in mind this fish is not being held at arm's length and I'm 320 pounds :)

Sorry to say my friend, but this looks like a solid 4 lbs. (Give or take a couple of ozs, picture is fuzzy, cant get a good look). But this is still a good looking fish.

Good lucks to you in catching the "BIG KAHUNA!"

I agree, but still a nice fish

I am hesitant to answer this question. It is too similar to a question I have answered by two different girlfriends, both times I had to duck

Hold your right hand fingers in the same position you are holding them in the picture and then measure the width. Then determine how many of those widths it takes to equal the length of your fish in the picture. Eighteen or nineteen inches would probably be in the three to four lb range.  If the length is 20 inches you're probably at least 4 lbs. Twenty-one inches would put you in the neighborhood of 5 lbs. Of course, these are still guesses. The girth of the fish is important too.

When I do that and enter it into a bass weight calculator it comes to under a pound - thinkin' my math is wrong!

looks to be around 3 pounds...  always hard to tell from a picture, but definitely doesn't look to be anywhere near 5.  either way it's a nice fish

Hehe think I remember that thread - it was entertaining...

We all do this and we all are usually way off when it comes to guessing that weight. It was kind of a dumb post on my part since I've been to a lot of tournaments where a hog came in at 3 pounds as here, and this pitiful skinny bass that was really long weighed 6-7 pounds. It's crazy. Going out today at lunch to try again and I've got my scale with me this time. The next post will be a confirmed weight! Good things. Good things!

What calculator are you using?  The Bass Resource calculator under the Tacklebox menu shows a 20 inch fish with a 14 inch girth is 5.4 lbs.  Are you sure you didn't enter just one side of the fish as the girth?  Girth is both sides, top, and bottom.   :)

I used the bassresource one. I'm not sure how my math is so off. I measured my fingers as in the picture and they're 3.5 inches wide like that.

Bout tree fiddy

My guess is tree to tree fiddy as well.

Here is a good tip.. next time you go out and don't have a scale or ruler then use fishing line to measure length and girth  then measure when you get home... also you look like a big guy (no offense) hold your arms with a cloth tape in about the same width. and add 3 or four inches for the tail.. if you get 19 or more inches you have a good fish in my book... any thing over 19 I take photos of for my fishin book the rest get set free right away. 19 inches usally gets high 3's to low 4's.

another tip is know how long your rod is from reel to first guide... then you can do a guess-tamate

and you have my last name.... don't know why but i always like to say that to people with my last name.. like it's rare or something lol

How big is my fish? I figured him for about 21-23". I put him at 5 lbs when I caught him, but when I got home I lifted a 5lb. weight and an 8 lb. weight, and reconsidered putting him at 6lbs.

fyi, this is best bass i've ever caught. totally makes me want to buy a digital scale.

Looks about 2 1/2 - 3 lbs to me, 4 tops.

Not enough girth to make 5.
