Bass Digging In The Sand

Featured Replies

I was pulling into my "secret" canal to fish and I was moving through there reeeal slow and noticed a HUGE 7-8 lb bass and it was digging with it's nose by a log and pushing around the sand. Was it trying to eat? Craw you think? I need to know as I have seen this twice in the same area and need to find out what they are sniffin after so I can replicate it and rip some lips!

Why would a bass in shallow slow moving canal water do this?

Don't care why ;)

My question to you is why aint you chunkin a jig or craw worm next to every log around that area and telling us about it over in the outings section?

Yea probably feeding but I wouldn't bet on that either; I just be chunkin ;)

Maybe saw a crawfish and was going after it.

Catt is correct.

Did you try to catch her?

Go back and try again. She should be in the area unless she has her own "milk run" and travels from favorite place to favorite place during the day and week.  :)

Isn't that how they make their beds? But its not time for that so i say digging up craws. Definitely jig em man!

I had a beta once that pushed the marbles in its bowl around to make a bed, and actually slept in it.

I'm surprised you could see the bass so clearly before it bolted. As Catt said try to catch it, the bass was active and looking for something to eat.

X2. Probably saw a craw or maybe a frog or bluegill dart under the log.

Get a bait in front of her first, ask questions later.

I would use my "secret" technique... works great.

I would throw top water right above it. If it is that active digging around. Just think what it would jumping out of the water snatching a nice Zara or Jitterbug. Might want to also throw a AC Plug in trout pattern.

I have set up an underwater camera,in our local river, and watched small mouth doing the same thing,a rather nice sized smallie was pushing flat stones over, and grabbing crayfish,as they were trying to escape, what was funny, was a creek chub was also close by grabbing, what the smallie missed, yes the chub was large enough so he didn't have to worry to much about becoming the smallie's next meal.

Very neat! Would love to hear more about what you've seen. How about another thread? :)

So, what your telling us is that you saw the fish, and you didn't even give catching it a fighting chance?

I don't get it. But, I guess that's the difference between you and me.

It swam away when I got closer. Usually by the time I see them and determine... "Oh &$#* thats a big girl..." they see me and move away.

That is how they hibernate, either that or it was afraid.  Bass are distantly related to Ostrich.  I thought everyone knew that.
