What to do if you hook yourself passed the barb!

Featured Replies

ok guys, something everyone should know is how to remove a hook from your skin, after it passed the barb. It does happen and with this trick you can save yourself time and money.

This trick really works, It saved me a trip to the ER.

1.] take 5ft of line or so, and wrap it around in 1ft intervals.

2.] Wrap it around the hook that's stuck in you.[not any other hooks]

3.] Press down with one hand where the hook is stuck in your skin.

4.] Pull hard, with 1 quick ''pop'' straight out with the hook. DO NOT PULL UP, or DOWN. Straight out in the opposite direction the hooks facing.

Mine did not hurt at all. Im not saying yours won't. But a little pain to keep fishing is nothing right?

ps: make sure of when you had your last shot.

How do you pull the hook out if the hook is a treble hook and is connected to the lure?

Take the hook off the split ring

Mine was a nice size crank bait. I kept the lure together and just sorta covered the hooks with a cloth.

I did that for a guy One time he had it deep in his hand. I didnt want to but he said just pop the dang thing out so i did it came flyn outa there  :'( He started to call me bad names and then passed out LOL

i knew somebody who was fishing in lake Michigan and it got rough and he ended up getting a treble hook in each hand , his hands were locked together like he had hand cuffs on , he said he stuck both his hands in the cooler with the ice for as long as he could stand it and had his friend use pliers and pull them out . i think i would have jumped over the side and drowned myself.

Someone on here had posted a picture of themself with a jerkbait or something and a treble in each hand, standing in the waiting room at the hospital or something.

Had a crank treble buried in the side of my neck many moons ago.  Yanked it out just like that and kept on fishing.

Been there, done that, got the shirt. I wish I would have known about that cause I had to cut a DD22 hook out of my finger with a knife. Maybe that way will be a little easier  ;)

Yes it works!  But be very careful that the hook is not in a nerve orlarger blood vessel.

I used it in May on a deeply burried No. 2 trebble.  It was down to the bone.  Not a problem I figured. I've popped out a few using the line trick but thist time was different.  The hook did come right out but it hurt way more than the others I have had popped out.

It was stuck in a nerve.  I know this now because I still don't have any feeling in that finger past the point of were the wound was to the tip  :(

I just blew snot all over my keyboard while visualizing your friend.

I had a crank bait hook get worked deep into my finger by a flopping fish once. It was past the bend in the hook so I cut the eye off the shank and pushed the point out , grabbed it with pliers and pulled it out.

Wish I had known that years ago.  A buddy of mine had to push the hook through his skin, cut the barb off and pull it back through! ouch

I was showing my mom how to cast a baitcaster in my yard, with a decent size crank on it. It got hung on a small root and I popped it came back and stuck in my calf I just grabbed it and yanked it out. hurt like hell for about a week.

Seriously, someone should make shirts:

"I buried a 5/0 EWG hook in my skin and all I got was this lousy t-shirt."

I did this over the summer, through the nail and the skin and out the top of my finger:

Fishing alone I became one with a 2 1/2 lb smallie via a silver buddy. One treble in the fish the other in my right forefinger. I did manage to get separated from the fish and the hook separated from the buddy but could not manage the logistics of hook removal solo......

Lidocaine and a scalpel did the trick. I nurse friend of mine now keeps both on hand for just such an emergency. The previous time it was with an excalibur treble (rattletrap) and a smallie also not conducive to the string method. I was 2 hours from home at the time and by the time I got back my finger was twice normal......not good to wait.

Lidocane is a great friend!

It's happend to me twice. Once my youngest son made a cast when I was standing beside him, don't know how he casted in that direction even to this day. Fortunitly for me I saw it coming at me and put my arm up to block it. He continued with his follow thru only to notice the lure never hit the water and I was screaming for him to put the rod on the ground and get away from it. He saw the lure in my arm and started crying and ran over to the bench. Because I did not want it to be a tramatic moment for him, I calmly cut the line and walked over to him crying on the bench and told him that I was ok, but that is why I told him to always make sure that there is nobody next to u when you cast. He stopped crying and said he was sorry. I calmly walked away to look at the damage. One treble hook had 2 hooks deeply burried in me and the other treble only had one in me. Two of three were hooked WAY passed the barb. Had I known about the method with the line I would not have had to pull them out with pliers, myself. Quite painfull.
