What exactly is flipping and pitching?

Featured Replies

I was looking to add these techniques to my arsenal but i am not sure what exactly they are, so could someone please explain them to me?

YouTube has "instructional" (more or less) videos of pros flippin and pitchin. I think there is one from Denny Bruaer. Try searching on youtube, and you will see what I'm talking about.

Flipping and pitching are different ways of presenting a bait.  Personally, I don't flip very much.  Pitching though, I'd have to say I pitch most of the time when I've got a bait caster in hand.

It's not just for jigs & soft plastics.  There are lots of situations where it is the best choice for spinnerbaits & cranks.   You don't need as much room overhead, all you need is a lane.

It takes some practice.  The first year I got real good at getting back lashes out of my reels and I bought alot of line.  Frequently it is easier and quicker to re-spool than it is to squander time picking out a back lash.

This is the reason I use braid w/ a FC leader. if you backlash braid, it wont leave a kink in the line where it would become a weak point. Give it a try you might like it.

Combine this with adding electrical tape or masking tape over the spool and you have a fairly fool proof system. I do this and backlashes are thing of the past.

the tape thing is a great Idea i've never thought of it.  the only problem I see is added inertial mass to the spool or is it negligible.  seems like it would make a difference when spool weight is such a big deal when pitching or flipping.  isn't that what makes a curado or core such a good pitcher or flipper is having such a low-mass spool

They are both techniques in  which u present lures quietly and very very accuratly into spots, usualy heavy cover.Lures like tubes, jigs, and other soft plastics. They are both in the closer range area of fishing instead of making gigantic over head casts

the main difference is that flippin is a close range fixed line technique, a throwback to the old jigger poling method. It was pioneered on the west coast in the 70's by guys like Dave Gliebe & Dee Thomas. The technique has changed little since then.

Pitchin is basically a type of backhand roll cast, which gained popularity in the mid 80's. You want to see a pitchin machine, watch Tommy Biffle.

They both have their applications, I haven't seen anybody flippin in many, many years. ' mos everybody is  pitchin nowadays. Although this is not true flippin, A flippin stick can also be deadly in downed trees. Get your boat up close to the tree, tie it off to a branch (silently). Then take the flippin stick with a jig on it , reel the jig all the way up to your rod tip, thread the rod  as far back in the gnarly stuff as you can. Hit the freespool & hold on. Repeat as needed. Worry about gettin the fish out of there after you hook it, not before. With a flippin stick & the above techique you'll get your bait in places that (most) pitchers just can't get to.

I've learned so much by just searching for stuff on youtube.

Sent a PM.

We can go to a local golf course pond and practice this spring.

Golf course pond is one of my double secret places to fish in Richmond so you will have to put on a blindfold until we get there.

Can you drive with a blindfold on???????  ;D   ;D   ;D
