i went out a few days ago and found a grassy flat that was between 5-8 ft..... there were bass chasing minnows around so i tried a fluke and managed to catch 3..... any other ideas on what to throw? i tried a spinner and some xraps, but its too grassy and i kept getting crap on my hooks..... thanks for the help

There are several ways to approach this. 1st, I would be using braid for the strength to get the fish out depending on how thick this cover is. A weedless frog, T-rigged tube, T-rigged stick bait, T-rigged creature bait. You might also try a C-rig with a 1/4 oz weight as this is pretty shallow. If weight is needed to punch the grass, a 3/8 oz should work fairly well.

the grass isnt really thick on the surface, so punching isnt an issue..... its like the grass is really thick on the bottom and the grass is also pretty patchy...

a spinnerbait would work well for this i would think, and i would start there.

This is my favorite way to fish. The morning will be top water. Then spinnerbait, and if the fish aren't very active, you go with 1/2 oz tungsten flippin weight and flip a beaver all day. Let it drop to the bottom give it a few pops, then repeat.

Try a tube or soft stick bait. That always works well for me.

Maybe some of the mentioned baits on a drop shot.

Jig/craw worm or a t-rig large worm.

Soft swimbaits like the yum money minnow.If you got wind then a buzzbait would be a natural choice along with buzz frogs.Topwaters morning and evening.Any places where the grass is sparse or you can see alleys then rip a rattle trap or a floating jerkbait. You mentiones a fluke,well try a trickworm as well unweighted or weighted with nail in tail,work it like a soft jerkbait.Lots of options if you know the fish are there.

Oh, almost forgot since it's been so long since I fished a place like that. If they are acting finicky use a light mojo rig with a slender barrel weight or tungsten bullet and your choice of finesse worms,flukes,small ribbon tails,floating tube. Just swim it through the grass.

If they are chasing bait in there like you say, try a swim-jig. It will come through the grass better than a spinnerbait.

Weed less or floating swimbait. Rattle traps work great ripping them through the grass. If you like watching paint dry try a senko.

Have you considered snap-jigging a 3/4 or 1 oz jig and craw?

Otherwise, a heavy, double willow spinnerbait or swim jig rolled thru the weed tops would be my first choices. Snap-jigging means quickly ripping the jig from the 9 o'clock rod position to the 11 o'clock position, and letting it crash back thru the weeds. You can cover quite a bit of water doing this, but it requires heavy tackle and braided line.

Try one that runs at a depth that ticks the top of the grass or try ripping a lippless through it.

I've caught literally hundreds of bass doing this. ;D

Just saw a guy this weekend rip out a huge pig on a grassy flat with a Strike King Shadalicious swimbait. He was slow rolling it and just clipping the tops of the grass at about 5 to 6 ft. I'd stick with the soft swimbaits if minnow are in the area. Unless you want to go with a hard bait, then I would throw an X-Rap.

If there was any room between the top of the grass and the surface, I'd throw a Spot or some other rattle type lipless crank.  With very little room between the top of the grass and the surface, a wake bait or a Minus-1 would be an option.  If the water was very clear, I might try a soft plastic swim bait
