Anybody try "OFF"s new advertised clip on mosquito repellent?

Featured Replies

Recently Ive seen OFF commercials about a clip on device that has a fan inside. "Puts an invisible shield around you". Has anybody tried it yet? Has it worked?  I religiously avoid using bug repellant when fishing but this year local govt. cancelled all mosquito control due to budgetary restraints.

See if your local library has last month's issue of Consumer Reports.  They did a test on most of the insect repellents.  The current issue addressed the OFF Clip-On and their recommendation was to stick to one of the better spray types.  Just don't get any on your lures.

Yeah I never use sprays cause once it messed up the face of a digital watch i was wearing.  Thanks I'll dig up that magazine.

Fish hate the smell of DEET. If you get any on your line, hooks, jigs or tackle, your productivity will likely drop somewhat.

I personally wear my battle scars (mosquito bites) proudly. ;D :D

DEET is the best insect repellent hands down, but if you are worried about the smell, try something natural like lemongrass oil. Bugs hate it and it even smells kind of nice. I don't know if it effects fishing at all, but it works!

I usually smoke cigars when the bugs are bad. If I don't smoke a cigar to keep the bugs away, I use a Deet spray and I often use both.

I dont hold alot of faith in natural alternatives. Cigar! Funny we used to smoke em when we were around a body to keep the funk out of our noses! Never noticed it working on the skeeters though.  Anyone ever try the Therma-Cell device?

Cigars work great to keep them off you upper body and head but they'll still bite your legs.

I've been thinking about trying thermacell but I've been pretty happy with Deet

thero-cell, hands down the best, we use it in the swamps hunting year around and in the boat when ever the bugs get bad. just does not work in the rain too well but then bugs are not out any how.

My wife bought one of the OFF clip-on's so that she didn't have to put spray on the kids, but I don't think she has tried it.  I thought it might be a good alternative to spray so that the smell would not get on baits.  The ThermaCell looks good too.

I used a clip on, had it under my at my feet by trolling motor pedal. Was swatting skeeters away from my calfs......

What is the thermal cell?

Didn't read responses so relax if already mentioned..

Go buy a Thermacell. All you need. Set it down beside you or buy the holster and belt it on your back. Worth every penny IMO.

What is a Thermacell? And where can we get them?

I did look it up but what if there is any kind of wind I would think it would not work as good,. And some people said it gets hot so I would think it would not be good in a boat on the deck where there is carpeting?

I think Wal-mart carries the Thermacell.  BTW - the wife said she did try the off thing, and was fairly impressed - as long as you are sitting in one place.  She had the kids on the deck playing out side.  I still think the Thermacell sounds better.

The Thermocell is useless with any air movement. I have one and using it while bass fishing in a boat is like having no repellant at all.

Greetings from New Jersey, the mosquito and horsefly capital of the world.

The cigars work good. Also using laundry detergent that is free of dyes and perfumes helps also. The dryer sheets in your pockets and up inside the brim of your hat are said to work well, I haven't tried that yet.

But when it gets unbearable, nothing beats the deet.

As far as getting repellent on your baits, I've read studies that ran the gamut from it will totally kill your fishing to no effect at all. Go figure. I use aerosol or pump spray repellents and generally don't get it on my hands. I personally don't believe trace amounts on a bait will make a difference at all.
