well its gettin warmer here in midwest   gonna do some ice out fishing   never seem to do that well   dont have boat so fish mainly from shore...is that the problem?  dont have much luck until later in spring     here early spring(ice out ) is good time for big bass    so does anyone have any suggestions    lures, tactics etc.   remember im stuck on the shore

I don't usually "Ice Out Fish" but I'm stuck on the shore as well. Mebbe just use mainly small jigs and worms, finese.

I try to look for warmer waters first. That could be a rocky sun soaked bank, whatever vegetation left over from last year, water draining into the body of water preferably from lowland drainage just something that could be like a 5* difference than the rest of the lake. You can go finesse like Missouribassman95 mentioned but I don't rule out slow rolling heavy spinnerbaits, cranks and lipless cranks either. Mid-day is usually better than mornings.

I'm fishing from the bank too (water still too cold to put the canoe in the water). After ice-out here I fished deep water within casting distance of the bank with jigs and soft plastics and got a few. Then, we had a couple of warm days and water temp came up so I started checking out small shallow coves that would warm up faster than the main lake and have been doing very well with spinnerbaits and lipless cranks. Got an 18"/2.91lb fish in 43 degree water just 90 minutes ago in fact!

Fish the wind blown bank, with lip less cranks and/or suspending jerkbaits w/ longer than normal pauses. If the water is cold AND muddy....................stay home and wait for it to clear up, the water may be cold still, but they will bite better IMHO in clear cold water than muddy cold water. And by muddy I mean choc. milk, a little stain in the water is good.

I have about another month and a half or so before I can even use the word ice out.  The wind blown banks/rocky banks are excellent suggestions.

X2 on those suggestions. I might add a slow fished jig or shakeyhead. I wouldn't even bother if the water is cold and muddy, you have to hit them on the head to get a bite in those conditions.

I agree with Goose.  At ice out the fish will tend to be deeper but under certain conditions you can find some shallow.  Do you have access to a drop-off into deep water from the bank?
