Im ready to give Pickwick a try.  what part should I try to get the hang of first.  I have been once below wilson dam but never been down any further than 7 mile island.  Im from Lawrence County Alabama and usually fish below wheeler.  What parts of Pickwick would you suggest????

I have only fished below Wilson a couple of times, so I can't help much. What I can tell you is that you need to be VERY careful, there is lots of dangerous structure in that portion of the river. This is one of the primary reasons why Pickwick is such a productive smallmouth fishery. If at all possible, you really need to go a few times with someone who knows the river. Get in touch with our BR member, electrikal, and see if you guys can hook-up for a day.

i am from wayne county so i live pretty close to pickwick but i havent had much success on pickwick except a catfish here and there.

I fish PICKWICK  pretty regularly an right now with the temps in tha high 60's an low 70's hit any banks up with SPINNER BAITS an u will PRODUCE quite a few FISH EACH TRIP!!!! but tha best PLACE i have found right now to catch NICE FISH is on tha back side of 7 mile island (LITTLE RIVER) an try to fish any tree's or stumps in the water with SPINNER BAITS an u should have a GREAT DAY!!!! o0o an be  prepaired to CATCH some  HUGE STRIPES....  ;D

My folks live on Wilson (bluewater) and their neighbor caught these smallies not too long ago down on Pickwick. I guess you guys got a bunch of rain down there recently, so they were runnin water out of wilson dam a whole bunch. that was right at the time these fella's caught em.

on a side note...any of you guys go to the hearing last night trying to squash the sewage treatment plant for Killen?

I'm not sure if they kept and cleaned them or not.  Generally speaking Joe (the guy holding the two big ones...7 pounders) is a catch and release guy I think.  I dunno about the other guy, though.

no live well I'd say he dosen't release, plus he nails them to a wood plank????

yeah, mabye so...but still...this is my dad's neighbor, not me, so I can't really say one way or the other.

Just thought you would like to see some good smallies from Pickwick.  

don't matta not my part of the country would love to fish there someday though.  I think the "wood plank" guy looks like Joe Gibbs lol

Caught my first 7lb smallmouth when I was a kid, there just below Wilson dam fishing with my uncle, Jab Buttrum. "1960" The river was full of 'em. Even caught some LM's during that trip. Those were the day's. Not sure if that part of the river is still that good but it doesn't have a chance if folks don't have a little common sense and conserve the resource. Mark Rose is one of our Pro's and he said it is still a very healthy river system. He won The FLW on Pickwick in 07. He used a green pumpkin football jig and pinched a green pumpkin Rage Tail Craw for a trailer. Dragging it over shell beds. Good luck to you and I hope you get into 'em. Let us know how you do.
