I have had good luck with the Baby Bass. The numbers are low,

but the quality high. This is a "cast & retrieve" lure, you don't

add any action to the presentation. All of the bass I have caught

on this lure have been caught on structure in deep, open water.

Two important suggestions (from Mattlures):

(1)  Lubricate the Baby Bass with MegaStrike.

(2)  When you detect a strike, set the hook HARD

and bring the fish to you. "Playing" the fish will result

in losing the fish. Use power gear and land the big girl!

The BaitMonkey hasn't intimidated me enough to start using swimbaits. Reading the reviews on here from other members, his baits are pretty much the "go to" for that type of fishing :)...

Thanks! Would it work well in shallower water or do you find your best results in deeper water?

Maybe some other guys will post up later with other suggestions,

but i haven't caught a fish in shallow water, in vegetation or around

cover. That doesn't mean it won't work, it just hasn't worked for me.

The theory is, this dumb fish is out where he shouldn't be swimming.

This is the part that gets me REAL interested, and probably why I'll be trying these this year.  Some of my biggest fish have come from chucking BIG baits where where big baitfish are most vulnerable to predation - in the open.  The only downside would be the 20 lb. northern pike that thinks the same way as my target species, LOL, like that would be a bad thing either.

What kind of position does it have when sitting on the bottom? Is it nose down like the bluegill or does it fall on its side? I have the perch pattern and was thinking about trying it for bed fishing.

great lure and i have used it alot last year in shallow water so i know it works. And follow the directions on matts site to keep them in good shape they will last a long time. This is a great starter swimbait and really isn't very big when you see it in person

Nice little starter swimbait. I tend to fish them along the bottom reeling in as slow as possible. A 2lb fish will have no problems munching on this little swimbait.

Glad you mentioned this. I like "playing" with my fish for a few minutes. My strongest rod is a 7'ML. Everything else is 6' "L"'.

If I get a Spro or TT hard 4" swimbait, will I be allowed to "play" with the first for a minute before landing, or are these baits designed to be used with much heavier rods?

you might be ok with the TT i hear it is really small but if i were you i would get a m rod its  a good all around action or at least a med, im guessing your using a spinning rod and im sure a m action will throw the spro or TT. if you want to throw the baby bass i would get a MH baitcaster setup

You won't have any issue "playing the fish" because you'll have difficulty throwing the bait at all.  I use a St. Croix Avid AVC70MHM, and the Spro and TT shad baits are just a bit over matched for the MH rods capability.

I fish the Mattlures Baby Bass on a St. Croix EC70MHF/ Calais/

#15 Hybrid. No issues.
