It's really simple: Don't use anything that isn't designed for animals.  It's kinda like rubbing dirt into a wound for humans - it might work, but it's not a great idea.

 

Use Please Release Me formula for bleeding fish.  Put it in your livewell and let them hang out in it awhile.  Or if you're fishing from the bank, a little pinch of Please Release Me directly on the wound often does the trick.
