The time has come to purchase a GOOD pair of sunglasses. They have to have readers built in (I'm farsighted) cuz I can't see to tie knots very well and even the screen on the HB is a little fuzzy. My local optometrist sells Costas and Oakleys. I'm not made of money so I can only afford ONE pair. Questions are: What tint would you use that will work on both sunny and overcast days?; Oakleys or Costas?; Plastic or glass?

I've been using a pair of $100 Bolle's without the readers and if it's even remotely hot outside the **^%%$* things fog up something terrible. All suggestions welcome.

I use grey for sunny days and brown for cloudy. If I had to choose only one I would go with the brown. I refuse to pay 200.00 for sunglasses. I use Solar Bats and I'm happy, but they are not prescription. if I had to wear glasses on the boat I would look into cacoons.

I tried a bunch and the best I have found is Costas amber and they are darker than I want but Annie the "costa queen" at BPS said grey is much darker.

Costas work good for me.

Costa now come with preset reader magnifications/prescriptions!

I use an 18 dollar pair of berkley polarized sun glasses... I wont pay 200.00 for sunglasses

I recieved some Costa 580p sunglasses about a year ago as a gift. They are kinda pricey but you won't be disappointed, as they are amazing.

I use clip-ons, they help somewhat, but the bigger problem is light penetration. They just let in too much light and are unable to block out your peripherals.

ill stick with mine that i got from p&c for $2 on clearance. they are no costas but they get the job done and if they fall in the water or break there isnt much of a loss. I will not pay over $30 for sunglasses. costas are nice $150-200, screw that

I wouldn't consider anything but glass lens. No matter how hard I try to keep them nice, plastics seem to scratch.

For that reason Ray Ban Ouddoorsman aviators model are my choice, standard green/gray lens. I've found that to be a good all around color and use mine driving, fishing, hiking, pretty much everything but skiing. My current pair is over 25 years old and the lens are still perfect. Some of the metal frame is starting to degrade, I guess from all the contact with sweat, but they ARE 25 years old. I've been through probably 10 good sunglasses with plastic lens over that time and I don't wear them nearly as often as I wear the Ray Bans.

I also like the flexible wire frames that hook totally around the ear so they stay on under most conditions.

I've had several pairs of expensive glasses but I love my Costas. I have 2 pairs, one pair of Fathoms that I got for $80 and another pair I can't remember the name of that come with 3 pairs of interchangable lenses that I got for $100. They are great glasses and I keep them on a Chums floating lanyard in case the got dropped in the water. They are an investment but you won't be sorry! If you have never used a pair of nice glasses you don't know what you're missing!

Reading glasses or sunglasses with built in readers are not for everyone. People with astigmatisms may have a difficult time with them, I can't wear them. For my offshore use I use flip up cocoons and my inshore use drug store flip-ups, no problems with either. Most of the time I don't wear sunglasses that's why I like the flip ups.

Glass is more scratch resistant. Costas have better lenses then Oakley. Not sure if that applies to prescription too as I don't have prescription. Grey is my preferred all around lens color. It leaves colors intact.

Thanks to all who have responded. I spent a lot of money over the years on El Cheapo glasses that scratch if you blow on them, and the vision quality was never there. That's why I prefer to get something that is optically correct for a change.

Oakleys are out of the running. My optometrist sells Costas, and another one up the road sells Wiley X brand. I'm going to look at both but right now I'm leaning towards the Wiley X "Jake" model with polarized "Emerald Mirror" lenses. We'll see....

i would never drop crazy money on glasses when spiderwire and berkley glasses work great. and at 15 to 20 bucks they are a bargain.

I'm too hard on sunglasses to drop big$$$ on a pair. I use the Solar Shield fit-overs that Wal-Mart or Walgreen's sells. They're about $20 a pair, and I'm on my 5th season with my current pair. I've even polished them with Meguiar's Plastix polish to remove scratches, and it works pretty well.

I've owned a few pair of polarized Oakley sunglasses and while they are extremely pricely ($200), after I started wearing Oakley's for fishing I never turned back. The polarization is baked right into the lens, not a coat, and I can't find a better pair for fishing.
