Topwater Frogs

Featured Replies

What brand of topwater frog do you guys use? What colors do you find best and when do u mostly use them? What kinda retrieve do you like? I use a ribbit frog white color have tried their larger bull frog but it doesn't make the ploping noise like the originals. I mainly use them in the morning and evening and when ever I find heavy cover like pads like most eveyyone would fish them. I do however find my self in the middle of nowhere tying a frog on just cause its so much fun to fish. I tend to fish my ribbit frog quite quick with abbrupt 2 second pauses every once and awhile. Me and my friends have had a lot of success this summer on them how has the rest of the communities been... Post pictures please.. ill have some up also of some topwater hogs. Now let's get some feedback basspro's.

Here is a topic they had a while back on what people like.

I don't have any hawgs yet but do well with the Spro Leopard.

My biggest fish I landed was a 4# bowfin that I landed on a Ragetail. Green Pumpkin/pearl I think.

Since your from Fredericksburg and incase wondering about where I caught these at or do my frog fishing, AP Hill. Well worth $20 a year if have a clean background since they do checks. These pics are from Boyou right off rt 2.

I can't wait to get one of these to try out but God are they worth $20?? I'm going soon to have to find out!

I love to use spro frogs and i found that if you trim about a inch or less of the leg skirts that they are easier to handle. I use darker colors at night and lighter colors during the day. Other than spro frogs i use rage tail frogs, Horny toads, and yum money frogs.

Spro frog is by far my favorite. I'm going to try the new SK KVD frog, I've heard it's way better than a Spro.

Does look nice but what's with the Spro like colors?

Is there any copyrights when come to colors? Or do you have to lease the colors?

I know but I might just have to do it. If anything curiosity is eating me up. Must try!

I don't know that it's better in any one way or another, really. I've been fishing one since I got back from Icast and there are things I like and things that bug me. I REALLY like the hook placement and the nose being sealed tight. The hook itself is a pig sticker, too; it's a sharp bugger. I like the body, it compresses easily but doesn't tear. I don't like that it's REALLY hard to walk. It glides very well, but doesn't walk for squat. The colors are decent and they seem to be reasonably durable. We caught a couple hundred fish the other day (literally, we had 250ish fish between the three of us, ranging from 8" to a 7lb fish...) on them and have yet to have a body tear. They're not bad at all.

Lately I've been using Spro popper frogs black and red and the yellow and green Spro Jr. Both have had some success. I find that lately every time I get out on the water no matter what time of day I have a frog on. I'm hooked. A friend of mine caught his first top water frog today. He was pretty stoked. I find that walking the frog is what gets a majority of my hits, walking it then pausing in what I think is the best strike zone.

I'm not too hot on the buzz frogs, if I'm throwing into some deep slop then the hollow body does it for me, and if I can get away with retrieving the bait like that, I'd rather use a jitterbug or a buzzbait. But it's really all up to preference.

Top water is a lot of fun. Too much fun. I may have to a hold an intervention for Squid Duck here because he neglects the rest of his baits now. It's just Ribbit frogs all day every day. And he fishes them so fast. It's insane.

Good luck Squid Duck, I'll see you on the water.

I like the Spro frog also, any color as long as it's black. Haven't tried the popping frog yet but once the water cools off a little and we get some rain to get the water back up in the weeds I'll have to get one and give it a try!

The popping frogs are pretty sweet. I like them a lot. And you can still walk them. I find it's easier to trim the legs.

Here's a pic of a top water frog catch, my best friend threw it to the spot, twitched it twice and wham.

Bought a couple of River2Sea frogs, (similar to the Spro) and have yet to actually catch a fish on one. I've lost a lot, but can't get the hookset. I've never had a problem with my Snag Proof rats.

I guess I'll just keep trying.

Have any of you guys had issues with inconsistency in the Spro frogs body stiffness? I've noticed that some(I have several) are a lot harder/Stiffer than others, especially compared to other brands. I've been on this kick of trying different hollow body frogs as they come out. This year I'm trying the Ish's Phat Frog and the Koppers. I like the Ish's so far, my hookup ratio is pretty good, even with small fish. haven't used the Koppers a lot but am going on a 4 day fishing trip this week and plan on trying it.

I have 2 spros now. I've had one for a year and the other I just bought. They were the same stiffness when I first got them. Now obviously the old one is soft and the new one is hard but for the most part I feel like they were the same when I first got them.
