Back in the fifties, one of the kids down the block had the Cadillac of Schwinns. The front forks were spring loaded, as was the seat. Man, how I envied that guy. My parents bought my bike at a police auction. I thought it was a great bike, but not near the quality of that Schwinn.

That bike is probably worth a grand today. I wasn't so fortunate. I had a regular Stingray in the popular "Bananna Yellow" color which was stolen. Could have been worse. My sister had a Sears Roebucks bike. I shouldn't make fun, I had to wear Roebucks jeans.

Yep I remember. I did not have such a stylish bike at the time. Mine was big enough for two, with luggage, and weighed as much as I did. I learned how to ride perched on the top of that behemoth; it's a wonder I survived. It did not have any tassels though...

I had a recycled parts special (dump pickins) 24" ? frame, 20" wheels/tires. I learned real quick to have the inside pedal, up, in the corners.Baseball glove on the handlebars, Zebco rod tied across the bars as well. Best time of my life

on one of those warehouse shows, the 2 guys bought a storage unit that had one of those schwinn bikes and he sold it for $3000.

My neighbor had that bike when I was 10 or so. His folks had the first Mustang in town too. I actually miss those times, like the nuclear air raid drills where we got under our desks, seeing Kennedy sworn in, watching Clay become Ali, drinking my first Mountain Dew, hearing Kruschev say he would bury us. What a time to grow up. There was nothing like the cold war and Fresca, huh?

I wondered how long it would be before we got to the playing card tactics. My ma could never keep enough clothes pins to keep the neighborhood kids supplied.

Did Schwinn make the Orange Krate also? There was a kid around the block that had one. Smallish front tire, springer front end, sorta looked like a chopper...

I saved my allowance ($1.00 a week)for months to buy a 'English Racer'. I was squating high cotton. It was the only on in the county where I grew up. We had an old guy who put a steering wheel where the handlebars go. He had about 50 screendoor springs holding it in place. He always wanted me to race him(coasting down a hill in frount of my house) and he always won as he and and all the springs + stearing wheel weighed more the me and my light weight racer.

My 7 siblings and I shared two "after market" bikes of questionable ancestry. One was pastel pink, the other purple. Us boys might've been concerned about these rather affeminate colors but since gravel roads were all they ever saw, we weren't too worried about what others thought. Both were 1-speed numbers with coaster brakes. Like Russian combat planes, they weren't pretty to look at but they were rugged as hell. My one brother, showing off and not paying attention, even rode one "through" a chain link gate. He lost. Ah! Good times!
