Magic Or Powerbait?

Featured Replies

Has anyone here ever used Magic Dough Bait or Berkley's Catfish Powerbait dough chunks? I have a bag of each sealed right now. I've used the Magic in the past with great results, but haven't tried the Powerbait. Thanks for any tips or advice.

If you're just after some channel cats to eat just get some cheap hotdogs. They're easy to use, cheap, easy to get, and catfish love them. Plus if the fish don't bite you can go home and eat your leftover bait!

True but it's not as convienient as the packaged dough baits because the dough baits have a longer shelf life, and they have a far more potent scent that I think attracts catfish in from a longer range of area. Have you, or anyone else tried them? And I do agree that hot dogs work well, but they only do great in waters full of cats, otherwise I'll find small panfish nibbling them away.

I've done pretty well with the magic catfish bait, never fished with the regular Berkley catfish baits but the Gulp catfish baits are great. The downside to the Gulp is the price. You might try a dipworm with some Sonny's wicked sticky or some other kind of punch bait. It's fairly inexpensive and all you have to do is use a stick to push you dipworm into the bait so you don't have to stink up your hands.

Yeah, dipbait or punchbait are great ways to go! They're really effective. I think I might just have to go catfishing soon :D . Do you have any tips on a small private lake that I've never caught catfish from?? There has been a confirmed 40 lber caught out of there by one of the residents, and that same resident claimed to have had a 90 lber on his line! Any tips on where to locate them? Thanks!

I'd really recommend a dipbait used with team catfish's "furry thang" keepers. I hear they work quite well and keep the dip bait hung up in the furs for a long time. I'd say order a pack of those and match it up with a hi quality circle hook, such as a gammy ;).

Yeah that may be a good idea! Or just use sponge hooks. i have a few packs of Magic Bait's sponge trebles, they seem really sharp and effective. I also have some of their bait dipper trebs with the tube AND a sponge on the hook. I make the cats so angry with those :D !

Sounds like you've got it all figured out :). I just prefer circle hooks because catfish usually don't take them in too deep and usually end up getting hooked around the corner of the mouth. All personal preference I suppose B) .

Yeah I've heard they're really effective. I prefer the Kahle style of hooks. They're more for me because I like to set the hook as soon as I see the line running or feel the bite. With circles, I just don't know if I'd have the patience to let the fish set itself ;)

ive used the power bait in blood flavor sent whatever it is and chicken or liver cant remember the lighter colored one the blood works best for me and have caught some nice cats with it biggest being about 10 pounds ive never used the magic bait but i know the power bait works good luck

Thanks! I just haven't caught anything on it yet but I do have something stealing the bait almost every time.

yeah its kinda hard to keep it on the hook just use a treble and make sure its really on there good you will get some eventually good luck

Thanks, I've gotta try out a treble, though the trade-off is the unhooking process when they nearly swallow it.

yes that is defiantly a down side just have exrta long pliers and if your planning on releasing them then i would try and debarb the trebles
