advice on fishing lipless crank

Featured Replies

i'm new to using a lipless cranks and would like alittle advice on how to use them?  thanks

Look in the fishing articles section of the website (top left corner of the website).

It really helps me when i try to learn a new bait!!

This sight taught me how to throw almost everything in my tackle box.

I fish them very effectivly. Two ways. A steady medium retrieve just ticking the top grass, and a let it sink and rip up  out of grass retrieve.

It's really not "how", but "where". A steady retrieve is what I recommend

Sometimes slow and sometimes as fast as you can reel! The key is fishing

the lure in, on or around structure and cover.

I have had some success fishing them through grass in 2-4' of water

at Guntersville and just off the bottom in 20-25' on the Tennessee

River. The point is, all lures need to be fished where the fish are

feeding. No fishy, no catchy.

the KEY is to hit the grass, wood, etc..Almost of all my fish come after contact!!!

Gonna have to agree with that.  Im sure there are some other ways but i haven't found a need to try them because of the effectiveness of these 2 methods.

I just throw them around cover with a medium retrieve and they usually nail it that way! If not i will slow down or speed up a bit. If the water is slightly deeper i will try the yo yo retrieve.

What do you mean by the yo yo retrieve?

First I will cast out along any cover or potential bass hang outs. I let the lure fall a few feet and then lift the rod up in a sweeping motion. This makes the lure dart back near the surface like an injured bait fish. Then simply lower the rod with a semi slack line and let it flutter back down, reel in slack and repeat. I have found this to be deadly when they are not chasing a trap!

I use a steady, medium retrieve while letting it flutter down a bit every now and then, and then ripping it forward with the rod tip. Making contact with cover does help, and the tactic the others have shared about ticking and ripping them above grass certainley works. They are a great search bait because you can fish them at any depth.

When: Year round

Where:

Main lake points 10-20' of water

Feeder creek channels 15-25' of water

Feeding/spawning flats 3 to 8' of water

Technique:

Reel keeping the trap a couple of feet below the surface and bounce it off wood.

Make a long cast, let the trap free fall to the count of 10, kneel on the deck, sticking 1 ½ to 2' of your rod tip in the water and slowly reel.

Slow roll like you would spinner baits
