Catfish Info

Featured Replies

I haven't been catfishing since I was little til yesterday. Must have attracted the whole lake when we threw in chicken liver juice. About an hour later we threw out 3 poles. Each one goes off as soon as it hits the water. We continuously caught them one after another, What other baits do you guys have luck with?

Raw shrimp is my go to bait. I get the big raw ones, I figure, tge bigger shrimp, the bigger kitty.

do you use a live bluegill on a bobber or on bottom?

put like a 1/2 to 1 ounce weight and a good sized hook on hook it through the back and cast it and leave it all day (dads house is on a lake in alabama) i watch it to see if it has fallen over or anything else of this nature and then check it at the end of the day if its gone i put another one on and leave it overnight (ive caught lots of big ones by doing this) but sometimes they will hit it within the first few mintues of it being out there.. ive also gotten straightend hooks and snapped lines when i leave it overnight i use 20 to 30 pound test good luck ! any more questions feel free to ask

I have found catfish much prefer freshed cut fish, usually I will fish up 10 bluegills and shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Then, I just cut them to chucks and have at it with 2 poles. Also, I have found that catfish likes fresh sneakhead chucks if you have them in your lake.

i use chicken livers, night crawlers, shrimp, cut bait and live bluegill.

ive hooked them from babies up to an estimated 40lber that broke my line after seeing it roll on the surface of the water on nightcrawlers.

livers usually get me a gang of 2-3lb cats, same as shrimp.

havent had as much luck with cutbait or live bluegill, but then again i havent fished them much. but im certain they work and will probably bring in bigger kitties than the other baits i mentioned....

Chicken liver is probably one of the best. What i like to do...liver bomb the water about 2-3 hours before fishing, like you did, then throw my rods out there. If you wanna catch the big ones, use big octipus hooks, little ones cant fit that in their mouths. But definitely try letting your liver float down along the bank...never know when you'll find a big catfish hole.

green sunfish, cut carp, live and cut shad. Natural baits catch the bigger fish more often then not.

do you guys prefer j hooks or octopus hooks? im thinking i may start using octopus hooks. i dont fish any cover just open water and let em run with it.

What do you guys use to keep the liver on the hook? Everytime I try using liver it flies off when I cast.

It depends on the size bait I'm using and size fish I'm targeting. Kahle hooks are great for smaller baits and smaller fish (under 20lbs) If I'm using a big chunk of cutbait or a big livebait I use a octopus hook that is actually a saltwater bait hook. I like them because they have a black nickel finish so they don't rust as easy, they're stronger than most freshwater hooks, and they're not as bulky as a lot of hooks marketed for catfish. Big hooks aren't a big deal for cutbait but for a livebait you want to stay alive, the smaller, lighter the hook the longer it will stay alive and effective.

You can either buy the mesh that is used to fish spawn bags for salmon and trout or you can steal your wife/girlfriends pantyhose ;) The pantyhose work great for livers. Cut a square and put the livers in the middle and fold the corners together and put a hook through all 4 corners. Just be ready to get some weird looks when you're at the story buying pantyhose

If you're using livers and don't want to use a treble hook then use a #1 or 1/0 Kahle hook. Thread the liver on the hook and then wrap it with thread to help hold it on. I'd probably use an octopus style hook for the nightcrawlers.

ya know whats funny is ive used everything from cut bait (shad, herring, mack, ect.) to liver, crawlers, shrimp and barely got a nibble. as soon as the dip bait is out, 10 pounder, 5 pounder, 4 pounder, 8 pounder... that was actually one of my catfishing days, no joke. all thecatfish i landed this year have been on stink/dip bait and nothin else.

i finally tried elastic thread recently and it worked pretty good at keeping the liver on, dont think one flew off on the cast...
