Whats a good all around topwater rod? For buzzbaits, spooks, and poppers, I've been looking at a St.Croix Triumph ? What do you all think ?

I use Daiwas TD-S 6'3" MH topwater/twitchin rod, it is on sale at BPS for $90-plenty of backbone, plenty of tip and I like the short handle. If you want a longer rod St Croix Mojo Mxfast 6'8" is not much more expensive than a Triumph ($100)and is desiginated as a topwater rod.

The only problem I have with the mojo is the fact that its a split grip rod and I dont like split grips for any type of casting techniques. I just use them for pitching.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking, I was going to get a 6'6" M/F Triumph.

I do not like split grips either but they are all the rage these days. Main problem with the Triumph/Premiers is that most have stiff tips and are under rated for power. Even my 6'6" ML Premier has too much tip for topwater.

I like the Cumara Reaction CUC63H.

A fast-taper is what you want, IMO. Power depends on the weight of lures/ cover. Length: idk. All my rods are 7' or longer. Trust me, I've no problem walking a Punker (think of a giant spook) with a 7'7" rod. Spinning or casting: your preference.

I currently use a Vendetta 6'9" MH/F and it works fine, but Im about to upgrade to a new Crucial Reaction Series 6'10" MH/F

Doesn't matter what rod, the action is all the matters. That being said my preference is:

M or MH witha Med/Moderate Fast Tip

Avid AVC66MF. The tip is soft enough for treble hooks. Mine is a dedicated

jerkbait rod, but it is perfect for all the applications you mentioned. Most

of my rods are 7', but I really like a shorter rod to work topwater and hard

jerkbaits.

Topwater plugs like spooks and poppers work really well on a cranking stick, IMO. I prefer a longer, heavier rod for buzzbaits that I would for topwater plugs, actually the same rod as I would use for spinnerbaits. Buzzbaits and spinnerbaits have more similar requirements than do buzzbaits and topwater plugs with treble hooks.

The Triumph is a great rod for the money. I like it much better than any Mojo for sure. The Avid is nice too.....just more money. You might also check out the Premier which is also nice. American Legacy Fishing has a great selection of used rods and I see a lot of the Avid and Premier rods on there for good prices. Cool trade in program they have too.
