Rapala X-Rap

Featured Replies

Is it just me, or is this a very beautiful lure?  I have it in three colors in my box and have found it to be the most killer bass bait in this area.

Anyone else love this bait?  ;)

Paul

I bought an X-rap and I havent had any luck at all with it.  I couldn't catch a current with it

What retrieval method are you using?  Are you using it like a slash bait, a wounded minnow, or just casting and retrieving?

I absolutley love the x rap. They are always a producer for me. No matter the color. Blk/gold is my favortie though.

what retrieval methods are you all using with this bait?

The X-Rap performs best when fish are very active. The lure

is designated as a "slash bait"  by Rapala. The attached video

demonstrates how the lure is designed to be fished:

8-)

yeah, ive seen that video about a thousand times, lol, trying to figure out what im doing wrong.  Ive slashed it, jerked it, burned it in, slow reeled it, everything.  Maybe the fish just didnt want it those days, I dunno, but Ive had ZERO luck with it

agreed....i have never had a hit on it

If you are using the xr10 I believe it is a 4'-6' diver. Just throw it out as far as you can. Crank it down to it's max depth(for me it seems to be about 8 cranks), pause. Remember it suspends, It will not float up or sink. Jerk 3 or 4 times and pause.Mix it up with the #of jerks and sometimes long pauses are the key to getting strikes. Sometimes very short or no pauses works better. You have to let the fish tell you what they want.It is one of my most productive baits.

There good baits! I went to puerto rico and caught several nice sized saltwaterfish(have no clue what they were) and on cloudy days I catch a ton of bass in the ponds I fish with xraps.

my go to lure when i cant get bit. just play with different retrieves the fish will tell you what they want.

I haven't either, but I still love the action they have. The fact I haven't caught anything with them yet means I either haven't fished them at the right places or times or it was something the fish didn't want. The other reason is that I keep forgetting to bring or use them. Can't catch fish with them if you (me) aren't using them. Doh! :-[

To the subject, I agree that they look great.

you probably have the same problem my dad has when fishing theses baits. he is really stiff and kinda predictable... I told him to try this and it work for him to mix things up loosen up and make it a little more erratic.... just cast it out and sing jingle bells in your head you da da da, da da da , dut dut da dut da, and jerk on the notes... switch from chorus to verse and you get two different retrieves.. which ever one gives you the most bites stick with..

They are beautiful.  The colors are vibrant.  The flash when swimming is tremendous.

I could not get a hit on them either.  Haven't tossed one since May.

That I hate treble hooks more than likely plays a part.  Last year I used various colors of the Mepps Black Fury lures in sizes three or four, and they produced.  Haven't used them yet this year.

I have these as well as some LC Pointers.  Never caught a fish on a LC Pointer, but throw out a X-Rap and hold on.

Later, ;)

Please don't start on the pointers.

Link Incheon wrote.  I usually have a tune going in my head, so I just fish along that tune.  If it's not hitting, I'll swap toons until something does.  It's a nice little bait.  I've fished mostly the XR-10, but I've picked up some XR-6s here recently that I want to give a try to.

Best,

Paul

Its the exact opposite for me...

That is a great idea, this is one of the best tips I have read anywhere. What an excellent way to concentrate on the baits rhythm. Well done.

IMHO the X-Raps are the most beautiful baits that are not super high $$$.  For me they are a confidence bait, I feel like I can catch a fish on them any day of the open water season.  They have the best action when worked aggressively and randomly.

An absolute favorite that I carry in about ten colors in shallow and deep versions.

They are good jerkbaits for sure. My favorite.
