How hard of a hook set for senkos?

Honestly I set the hook with a senco about as hard as any hook set while fishing for bass .

Depends on how you have it rigged.

if its wacky rigged, i usually just reel down and lift up. but if its texas rigged you gotta swing big.

How is it rigged, line type, and hook type (light wire, or heavy wire) all play into how hard you are going to have to set the hook. But in general if I am t-rigging with a regular wire hook its not much more than a sweepset, t-rigging heavy hook heavy cover, cross there eyes!

EWG Trokar not much of a hookset is needed. I fish wih guys who try to rip the fishes head off everytime they set the hook. I think this does more harm then good. The harder you set the hook the bigger hole you rip in the fishes mouth and increase your odds of losing the fish. With a good hook and flouro it does not take much to penetrate the fishes mouth..

Ever seen Gary Yamamoto fish one? Maybe he fishes circle hooks but the guy just lifts and starts reeling and it seems to work well for him. Personally I set like a regular T-rig if that's how it's rigged. I use a quick snap set on a wacky rig.

I would suggest looking at the Owner weedless wacky hooks, or a good quality circle hook for wacky rigging, with either all you need to do is lift up and start reeling, imho opinion though circles are the way to go for wacky senkos

I prefer light wire hooks and spinning gear for Senkos, both wacky and Texas rigged, so I don't set the hook very hard. Just a reel set is all I need.

senkos were designed to all but fall apart on a hookset. ever noticed how "aerated" they seem? you can, with any quality hook (Owner cutting point) set the hook with a stern, forearm hookset.

I set as hard as my equipment dictates. (Sometimes harder )

Like several others said, it depends on the hooks you are using. I personally use Owner Twistlock light wire hooks for my Senkos and I just reel in the slack and they are hooked. I also use a Revo STX 7.1:1 which I feel is a benefit for my setup. I've also noticed the EWG Owners require the same reel set too.

Have yet to catch a bass on a Senko. I have caught them on the Rage Thumper, rarely rigged weedless. Just keeping the slack out of the line and adding a couple wrist snaps in the opposite direction of the fishes movement is all I have done. Always works. Really, I just don't know any better.

I seem to miss a bunch with the "big swing" especially cranking. I suspect that all our "big swings" are different. Your mileage may vary.

My son just turned six years old and he has probably over 100 senko bass in the past twelve months fishing our golf course pond with me. He basically has no hook set. He usually doesn't realize a fish is on there until the rod is bent over with a fish tugging at the other end. The fish swimming off with the senko essentially hooks itself.

Usually with a senko setup you are talking about a M action rod, a thin mono/flouro line and fairly long casts....i.e. fineese. How much force can you expect to generate swinging with some massive hookset, anyway? I think the best way to fish these baits is with very thin wire hooks (you want this anyway so as not to affect the fall rate of the bait) and a light reel set.

I would put my sons catch rate percentage with a senko up against most fishermen I know. A six year old has the inherent advantage of not having that Alpha Male tendancy of needing to actively work the bait, imposing his will on that stupid fish. My son will work that bait as slowly as he needs to. He'll sit on that bank for 2-3 minutes sometimes not moving the bait at all before I see the line moving off.

I use a 6'9" M/F rod with either a Owner 4/0 or 5/0 Twistlock hook with 6# flouro on spinning gear and set the hook with s swift jerk. I have them t-rigged and use the same setup for Fat Ika's as well and the same type of hook set.
