How Many Baits( Hooks ) On Alabama Rig In Your State?

Featured Replies

Only 3 allowed in Missouri. That's single hooks as in swim baits.I'm waiting for Conservation Dept. to call back about putting 3 crankbaits with multiple treble hooks on one. BULLSEYE TACKLE in O'Fallon Mo. is making a 3 wire rig.

I think 3 treble hooks would be ok, one on each bait.

Have you considered using two baits without hooks, and three with?

That's one option or you could use spinnerbait blades or hookless lipless crankbaits. Anyone with a good idea let us know.

Remember each blade of a spinnerbait is considered a hook for some reason on the alabama rig.

There should be no problem with three cranks as you stated.

Spinnerbait blade = hook. I don't understand.

? They'd only bite the ones without the hooks!:o

In Tennessee you are allowed only 3 baits on an u-rig if they are larger than size 6. Or, you can use 5 baits with only one hook on it. HOOK==> this can be single, treble, or a set of trebles (crankbait)

Each blade of a spinnerbait is considered a bait... its a teaser, so, TWRA ultimately calls that a "bait" hook or not. I guess that we are technically not allowed to use a quad bladed spinnerbait.

Several guys are taking the rig and only using 3 baits of the same size on it (all with hooks)

Others use 5 baits, for the visual appeal, and use a little bit bigger bait in the middle and place the hook on that.

I started to side with the more hooks better percentage. But after fishing the bait with 5 hooks and catching fish on the middle bait over 70% of the time. I think I would be just as confident with 5 baits and 1 hook. It would go thru cover better this way too. I've still got a lot of testing I am anxious to do though.

*Check out Ott Defoe's facebook. He fishes Cherokee and Douglas a lot which are our home lakes... He's nailed some BIG bass.

That's what they are doing out here in California.

NY its 15 hook points maximum.

From the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website:

"Each angler is limited to two lines with not more than two baited hooks (single or treble) or artificial lures per line."

1 line and 1 bait here, obviously baits with multiple treble hooks are allowed, but I doubt a multiple rig the a rig would be allowed in MN

I think I've got a couple ideas to tweak the presentation too. I can't wait myself.

The concept of the Alabama rig still blows my mind.

I'm iffy about it, but being legal ill probably make one and throw it a few times to see what happens. I know a guy who's in BASS Federation and he is overly excited to throw an umbrella rig on St. Clair. He's been saying hell be taking me down there come spring since I've never had the pleasure of fishing down there.

Owner of our good local tackle store says you can have a hook on all 5 arms of the A-rig here in Arkansas.

5 baits in NY.

MD DNR has this posted on their site currently.

"The Department defines the Alabama Rig as an umbrella rig. The umbrella rig, as described on page 39 of the 2012 Fishing Guide, may not have more than two baits or lures which have hooks. Additional hooks can be removed to bring the rig into compliance with regulations."

In Vermont (ALL of Lake Champlain), according to our DNR/F&W you are allowed 2 baits. 3 spinner blade and 2 baits it ok.

Wisconsin is 3 and Iowa is 2.
