I was wondering if anyone makes a depth finder? I see the ones at BPS, but they are the fish finders which also come with a depth finder built in.

I am only after a depth finder...........do they exist?

Look at flashers. I believe that would be what your looking for.

hmmmmm, those cost just as much if not more than a fish finder.....I figured they'd be a lot less in price.

I was looking on Craigslist and fish finders arn't all that cheap on there either.

my main thinking was lets say I'm travelling at "X" speed and out of the blue the depth, decreases. I think that would be a better time than ever to have a depth finder. I was HOPING for somethign simple that only had that function. But I guess it's a waste of money when you can have that as well as a fish finder all in one.

That's what a map of the lake, and some judicous time on the water is for. But, if you are looking for something with that fast a response, a flasher will do that. I love a properly tuned flasher. Problem is, once you notice the depth creeping up (that's if you notice) it's probably too late. get a contour map of the lake, use your eyes, and when in doubt, kill the motor and trim up.

If you are lookingfor something to protect you and your boat from a sudden decrease in depth a sonar won't do it. The response is just slow enough that when you see the depth decrease your motor will have bottomed out. Known to me before I lost a lower unit but I had found a rock that I didn't know about. That rock is now marked in red on my map of the lake.
