DD22 in a farm pond?

Featured Replies

Ya'll ever fish a deeeeep diver like this in say 10-15 feet of water in a smaller pond - the one I fish is 4 acres and I'm told 15 feet in the deepest corner. It's covered in slime on the bottom which would normally force me to throw tiny cranks - which i need to try more often. I just thought the dd22 might produce. I have a theory that the longer bill will keep it from dragging up too much of the slimy stuff. Thoughts? comments?

I almost ALWAYS fish a crank that runs deeper than the water I'm fishing.  If you're just hauling water, you're usually just wasting your time.

As far as it picking up less slime? No you'll get more. remember though that you can control the depth a little with short casts, rod up,and longer pauses in retrieve.

Remember, if you do throw it. It will reach the bottom. I don't know about where you live, but the lakes I fish have TONS of grass. A pain in the butt to pull a DD22 through. If you can position your rod right you can just tick the top of the grass and it will work. But slime I don't know about. It seems to me that it would cover the lure, and I have never caught anything on a lure that was covered in grass, slime etc.

i throw many deep divers in the small ponds that i fish.

as for the tech. i use,

cast it out as usual,

retrieve with short bursts of the rod, followed by a pause (as to let it get a little more shallow again) and then reel the slack.  Repeat all the way back in.

this keeps the bait much more shallow, and gives it an erratic action sending it an all angles.....

works quite well for me.

Which is kinda like what I was trying to say,but explained better.

If you are fishing from shore, you won't be using a DD22 very much. I'm guessing about 2 casts will do it.

The long bill may keep the slime off the hooks some, but the bill and body will be slimed and that will affect the performance.

I fish alot of slimy ponds. I never use crankbaits because they are a pain in the butt to fish. I find sinking plastics to be the ticket around here for pond fishin :)

That's exactly what came to my mind.

Using the DD22, some patience and a lot of casting you could be responsible for removing most of the slime on that pond bottom and make life easier for so many other fishermen.

Go for it.

True, but it would probably grow back in a few days...That stuff is ridiculous.

I agree,  you always have better results bottoming out.

Or you could just throw a Manns thirty plus first..That way you just dredged a thirty foot ditch in the pond..Then the DD will have a nice ditch to run in......
