I spent the weekend tying my first bunch of jigs, punch hubs, and spinnerbaits. The some spinnerbaits have 80-100 strands of silicone/rubber and seemed to be too much (or I might have just been too critical of myself). But it got me to thinking, can you "Over Skirt" a bait? I know it adds bulk but is there something else that might happen?

This is just my opinion. When you get over the 66 stands the jigs get more difficult to tie, keep material in, or cut the material as your tying. I dont make any jigs like that unless someone specifically wants it.

I agree totally with that.

As for the spinnerbaits....It's a bulk vs. movement issue. The less strands there are in there the more the skirt will move in the water and "breathe" so to speak I like thinner skirts for clear water. In muddy water though bulk is sometimes better because it displaces more water and movement is less of an issue since visibility is low.

I use 2-3 tabs per bait depending on the effect I am going after. If you want a bulkier skirt try the Starflash skirts as they are great.

I try to keep it at 60 strands or under. But its all personal preferance. If you have confidence in 100 strand skirts, then by all means tie 100 strands.

60-70 tops. I found 50 to be perfect. Nice looking baits.

My brother sends me jigs every winter that he makes.(see Jig Candy) He knows I like a bulky skirt and ties 120 strand skirts on my jigs. I fish a couple lakes here that literal has some hawgs and I like to give them a larger profile jig, although I think that every jig has a time and place. It's a matter of preference.
