St Croix Rage Or Micro Magic?

Featured Replies

Im looking for a new spinning rod for roughly around the 130-160 range and i came across both the rage and micro magic my question is which do you think would be a better choice they are roughly the same price and both seem like good rods the only thing i noticed is the rage is a full grip design while the duckett is a split grip but aside from that which one or a different brand in the group would you pick? im looking for a 6'6 medium maybe mh action for light jigs weightless worms and light worm action

If you like the full eva grip then I would pick the rage. If you haven't considered the new Shimano Crucial then I would give them a look. They have a 6'8" M and MH rod that I think will be better than both the rage and duckett for your needs. Good luck!

I have a Rage spinning rod and really like it. The grip is very comfortable and the rod is light and sensitive. I have no experience with the micro but I know they are extremely light from holding them in stores. I'd say it's all a matter of personal preference and what feels better in your hand if you can hold both of them.

I love the handle of my Rage rod. I think it's neoprene but it's not EVA. HOWEVER, you may not be able to find one with straight enough guides to suit you.

I have a few ducketts, using them on baitcasters only but I absolutely love them. Great quality and great warranty. I haven't heard too many good things about the rage. I hear a lot of people aren't a huge fan of the neoprene grip. If you need the feel than the cork is going to suit you better in my opinion. Do check out the shimano rods though they are very nice. Also might not hurt to pick up an avid rod and see how it feels. A little more pricey ( only 20 more than a duckett) but also great quality.

thanks for all your tips and that was the one thing i wanted to know about the rage is the grip cause i do use cork and i like the looks of the split grip cause my bc is split and i love it looks like i got some thinking to do luckily the eastern sportsman show is 15 minutes away from me this week

I'd go with the duckett. I fish mostly st croixs (ltb's) and i wouldn't buy a rage for $100, i just don't like those rods at all.

thanks for the tip i saw mixed reviews for both most of the time it was one bad review for the duckett and a few mixed for the rage so i guess for the same price ill go with the duckettt only problem i noticed all the pictures only show the bottom stripping guide and the the the split grip none withe the actual micro guides which bugs me

Personally, I wouldn't buy either....they're ugly and that's enough for me. I would suggest the Pinnacle Perfecta Tournament Class rods or Dobyns Savvy Series.

See if you can hold a Shimano Crucial while you are there. I and many others would take a crucial over the rage or duckett any day of the week.

Im tossing this out in case you dont know. St Croix site is having a sale on rods Legend Tournament Bass for $161 They have a LTBS70MF that is 7' Med Fast a little longer than the 6'6" you wanting but a higher-end rod than the Rage. They have a number of other sizes as well like 66MLF, 69MLXF

This is a great suggestion, if they have what you are looking for, even better than buying used, which I was going to recommend. But I would also recommend you CALL them to place your order if you decide to do that. I've read on another forum about the online ordering not being up to date with quantities, and having trouble getting a timely refund if it turns out they are out of what you want. If you call, they can actually check inventory while talking with you. Works much better that way. Talking from experience here.
