Crankbait/spinnerbait And Jerkbait/topwater Line Advice

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Hoping to get some advice on line preferences for the following setups. These are both for BC reels.

- 7' M/M - crankbait and spinnerbait (1/4 - 5/8) - considering Yo Zuri Hybrid 12#

- 6'6" M/F - jerkbait and topwater (1/4 - 3/4) - considering Sunline or CXX 12#

I fish in water with toothy critters, would using braid be benefical or does it even matter?

I've used braid exclusively in the past but am know thinking of moving away from it and trying to get the best line for the gear and lures.

I know some like individual setups but this is what I'm going to use until I save up for more gear!

Thanks.

If you want to keep it simple, Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 will be fine for most of

your fishing with baitcasting equipment. #6 Hybrid is what I would recommend

for spinning gear. One tweak that was suggested by all the pros

was monofilament for jerkbaits, but this might be something you will want to

experiment with for all treble hook presentations. I have been impressed with

Sunline Super Natural.

Crankbait/spinnerbait - I would go 12# Seagur Abrasx - great strength, sensitivity, and low memory for flouro

Jerbait/topwater - I fish 10# invisx on my jerkbait rod, but if you are stuck on combining these two techniques, I would choose a 10# mono of your choice - I have 10# big game on my topwater setup.

Thanks for advice.

I guess I'll buy a few spools from the mentioned brands and give them a try.

I think I'll get some braid as well. Any recommendations? I've used Fireline and Power Pro in the past.

Power Pro has a new braid out that is suppose to be pretty hard to beat!

I would NOT fish a spinnerbait on a medium-moderate rod. Spinnerbaits may superficially seem similar, but the hooks and hooksets are COMPLETELY different. A fast or x-fast taper on a medium or medium heavy rod, depending on the weight of the bait, will drive that big hook home at distance. Use your jerkbait/topwater rod for them instead. That will make a great sniper style rod for hitting precise targets like docks, weed openings, rock piles, etc.

For line, I use 12# Trilene 100% Fluoro or 10# P-Line CXX for cranking.

Topwaters, jerks, spinnerbaits, 12# P-line CXX works fine for me.

You can sub Yo-Zuri Hybrid for any of those as well.

Always pretreat your line with KVD Line & Lure.

This one is tough if those are the only two rods to use. Normally I don't like fishing a spinnerbait with anything less than 15 and won't fish crankbaits on anything over 10 unless its a lipless crank in which I use 15lb or 50lb braid. Topwaters I like to use 30lb PowerPro braid which floats and on a long cast really does a nice job of setting the hookset. Jerkbaits I normally use 8lb P-line CX mono. But if those are the only two rod/reel combos you have to use for these techniques I would agree with RoadWarrior 100%

i would think 14# fc on the spinnerbait/crank rig. you can always change from a 4'-6' depth crank to a 6'-8' to compensate.

i would go #14 mono on the topwater/jerkbait rod,

be sure to check actual diameter of whatever line you choose. a lot of companies "strong" line (pline comes to mind) is actually quite a bit larger than other companies line in same pound test. when i used cxx i never went over 12#.

Another voter on P-line CXX. I use 15# for my buzzbait/ Spinnerbait setup. I have 10# Trilene flouro on my crank setup and no complaints so far on either products..
