Best Spinning Setup For Under $150

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to buy a spinning setup for dropshotting and shakey heads. I'm not very familiar with spinning setup so I'm asking for advice in what to buy for under $150 for these uses. I really like shimanos products, but If there's a better deal or better setup that's fine with me I don't care. Thanks

If you like Shimano you could go with a Sahara Reel, really nice Reels for $70-$80.

For a Shimano Rod there is the 6'8 Dropshot 2011 Model Shimano Crucial that is listed pretty often on ebay that usually goes for less than $80. The new 2012 Shimano Clarus is another option for around $100.

I just bought a 6'6" M spinning Berkley Lightning Rod Shock and a Shimano Sonora (the orange one) at Wal Mart for a back up/toss in the truck pond hopping rod. The whole set up cost me $90. I was extremely surprised how light the Lightning rod is, it is lighter than my St Croix 6'8" M power XF Mojo.

There is a nice Denali Dropshot Jadewood rod for sale in the fleamarket forum for $50 tyd. It is in mint condition the seller emailed me pics the other day. That would leave you money for nice reel.

amazon.com has the fenwick elite tech smallmouth series for something like 75-80, its normally a $130 rod, and i have yet to hear a bad review on it. that would leave you a fair ammount for a nice reel to go with it for another 70-80...lots of reel choices in that category (another thread atm about best spinning reel under $80 so i wont go into that here!)

i have not fished the elite tech, and have only seen 2 in person, a 6'3" mh/f spinning and i think it was the 6'3" mh/mf casting, they are extremely light wight, read on another site that the 6'10' mh/mf casting rod is like 3.6 ounces, dont know if you can beat that for the price (even at full retail)

I agree, the Fenwick Smallie rods are supposed to be awesome and if you can find one for under 100 bucks than I think it would be great married up with a president or sahara reel for that application. That would put you under the 150 dollar mark.

I think there is a 7 ft 4 medium fast and a 6 ft 9 medium x-fast. Either would work well.

Did you have any luck on your search? If not the new BPS Extreme spinning combo seemed to be very nice. I just bought this combo for the wife and it's about $150. Also if the Citori anything like the older rods the Browning Citori combo goes for $150. I have the Citori older rod that I absolutely love. I know the new ones are split grips as well as the new Extreme rods.

I'd get the elite tech 6'9" for $80. It is a great deal full price and is a steal at $80!

I have a Sahara 1000FD and am considering buying that rod for it.

Pflueger President Spinning reel and a Shimano Compre rod should do the job very nicely.

The Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth you would want for drop shoting could be one of 2 , either the 6'9" M-XF, or the 6'9" ML-F, both will work but in my opinion I'd say go with the medium power, extra fast action, and the reason is the rod is a little more versatile and since you got a 2500 size reel you could easily go from drop shotting to throwing senkos or tubes or even 6" Flukes or other soft jerkbaits without any drop in performance. I got that rod for light jigs, tubes and shaky heads and was really impressed at how well it handled the smaller lures I was using but was super impressed when I began using it for super flukes, it was nothing to launch the bait and working the bait was effortless. Now, if you want to go with a drop shot only rod the medium light, fast action may be more to your liking. I will tell you my honest opinion on them, I got the 6'9" M-XF spinning set up and after fishing it I got a casting version, a 6'10" MH-MF for larger crankbaits like 7/8oz traps, 5/8 and 3/4oz wake baits and square bills and found it to also make a great jerkbait rod. It feels great in hand is pretty light for a MH rated to 1oz, on my local butchers certified scale the rod weighed 3.83oz and I was able to get it on Amazon for a very good price. I plan on getting at least 2 more and I can't understand why these rods weren't priced a lot higher, I glad they weren't but don't be fooled by the price, they are quality sticks and I wouldn't have any trouble paying more for one. BTW, I paid the $129.99 for my spinning rod as I got it when they were first released and the only place I could find them was directly from Fenwick but now Cabelas has them so I just go there to look at and handle the other rods in the series so I know which one I want. Trust me, if you get one you won't be sorry. Check the link I put in here, a good price for the rod.
