I've been thinking recently about changing the round split rings on my crank baits and some jerk baits (xrap, husky jerk, etc.) to oval split rings.

Can someone tell me the pros and cons of making such a change?

I changed mine to oval and I didnt see much difference honestly supposedly they make em track truer and better for tiring knots and not having it on the start of the ring. Me I did t notice a difference from o to oval to none at all they all swam the same and caught the same befor and after the change up.

I would think the only advantage is the line tie split ring. I don't think there is any advantage where the trebles are concerned. It is much easier to tie a knot when you don't have to be concerned with the line slipping into the gap in the split ring.

It does seem that most of the oval split rings are higher quality. (although I am sure there are cheap versions) But that could be an upgrade over stock rings if you've ever had a problem with them breaking or straightening.

I really like them for line ties though, especially when I'm fishing at night.

I like the oval split rings better simply because its easier to tie the line to it without getting caught in the split part. I have not tried them with the hooks simply cause i like the hook as close to the bait as possible.

This is the same as I have found. Its more in the tie then anything else IMO.

I would only change it in the line tie. Using them with the hooks has no advantage over the round one already on it.

Like others have stated, it's all about keeping the knot out of the split. There's no other advantage, but that is a good enough reason to change.

I also use them to "code" my cranks. We all know crankbaits are not created equal. Some just catch more fish than others. The best have a little extra "wander". When I find one of those special baits, it gets an oval split ring.

I too remove the split rings and use duo locs.
