  1. I'd jump all over the rod. I have a few Techna's and absolutely love them. I wish I could find a couple more honestly.
  2. I'm in the minority here I've never been able to get comfortable with a fast action fly rod in all my years of fly fishing ( about 15 yrs or so.) I prefer slower action rods and absolutely love bamboo rods. They just fit my casting stroke better. As others have echoed I would recommend going to the store and try out various action rods and get what feels comfortable. I know my nearest Cabelas will let you try out their fly rods if you ask them. Also, just like bass fishing rods one company's rod actions will vary from one another.
  3. I haven't even been out yet. I do *** you guys in the southern states. Other than I hate fishing dirty water
  4. I'm still a novice when it come to bass fishing, but I'm more accustomed to fish clear water lakes compared to what angler's in the south fish. I'll echo natural color soft plastics and jigs work very well for me a majority of the time as do cranks and jerk baits. Very rarely do I throw something "flashy" when fishing for large or small mouth bass. I've also noticed I tend to throw smaller offerings compared to others that I know that fish dirtier waters. I think fishing clear water takes a a lot better presentation and tactics than fishing dirty water as well, but that is just my opinion. A little off topic, but I remember when I had a guided trip on Lake Fork a few years ago. I was totally out of my element fishing there. I've never seen such dirty water in my life. It was like chocolate milk.
  5. I have a couple Powell Max rods that I've been very pleased with. I only wish my local retailers would carry the endurance line of rods.
  6. I have an Allen alpha III reel for my 8WT. steel head set up. I have the red and blue version. I believe they're around $150.00 and in my opinion the best value in that price range.
  7. I personally didn't like the rod in question ( 7 FT MH reflections casting rod.) It felt dead in my hands while using it. I ended up giving it to my brother. Now if you don't mind buying a rod without a warranty you should really consider the Powell Diesel lineup of rods. I have the 7'6" Diesel rod and it has a ton of power to it and has pretty good sensitivity to boot. I use mine for throwing paddle tail swim baits, heavier jigs and big spinner baits. I've been really impressed and honestly surprised by how good this rod has been for me. I just wish it had cork grips because I HATE foam grips.
  8. I've been toying with them in my yard and I'm really liking the Fuego a lot, even more so than my Quantum Tour I have. The Alphas blows my bass pro prolite out of the water casting my LC 65 pointers and other smaller cranks, the advantage while it casts great just isn't too comfortable to me. I'll probably be giving the Advantage to my Father for an early father's day gift. I do wish I had more money because he has a upgraded limited edition pixy and a pimped out Zillion coastal that he might get rid of as well. From my understanding he got some sort of sponsorship with Daiwa and is replacing all of his reels with the Steeze reels because he is getting a steep discount on them.
  9. Thank you guys very much! I just got home from meeting with the local guy about the Daiwa Advantage 153 HSTLA and came home with a Alphas Type F, Advantage 153 HSTLA and a Fuego for a total of $225.00. The Fuego has a bit of boat rash to it as does the Advantage, but the Alphas is brand new looking. I can't wait to give them a whirl this coming Thursday. Once again thank you for your guys replies.
  10. Thank you every one for your replies. I do have a question for you if you don't mind. I just found a Daiwa Advantage 153 HSTLA for sale locally in like new condition. My only question is I have small hands for a male and was wondering if it really is somewhat hard to plam the reel with smaller hands? It looks a lot wider than my quantum reels that I use.
  11. I had the opportunity to use a Daiwa PX type R a couple days ago and was completely blown away with it. With using that reel I'm very intrigued to buy a Daiwa myself in a month or so, but don't have the $500 to drop on the type R or I would . I was just wondering what reels they have old or new that would be worthwhile to look into buying for around $200.00? This would be my first major Daiwa reel purchase. (I had a megaforce for a very short time.) My only requirement is that it needs to be left handed and it will be for my pitching rod. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Jacob.
  12. Man I wish I can get my hands on a couple more Techna AV rods, I've haven't found another rod I've like better.
  13. A-Jay, That fish looks stunted I purchased a couple Energy PT rods from Simmons Sporting Goods last year and I actually really like them a lot. Probably the best $50.00 purchase I've ever made on bass fishing gear.
  14. I use 20Lb white braided line on my three steelhead and salmon setups and have caught plenty of fish with it. I would use it for my bass setups too, if my local stores carried heavier pound test.
  15. I'm looking into picking up a new rod for pitching and I'm torn between these two Falcon Cara models. I don't have anywhere around me that carries Falcon rods so, I was hoping that some of you could chime in on this particular rods. It would be much appreciated. I have been very pleased with the Lowrider spinning rod I bought earlier this year and that is why I'm really looking into the Cara Lineup. Jacob.
  16. I also have that exact rod you're talking about. It's the best $70.00 I've spent on fishing gear for quite a long time. I throw hollow bellied swimbaits with it mostly and some 3/4 oz to 1oz jigs if I need to punch through weeds. I've also used it to throw lipless cranks while wiper fishing and it does that quite well too. The rod itself has backbone to spare and I was pleasantly surprized how light is compared to my other 7'6" stick I have. The guides have held up well to braid all season long. The only gripe I have is I HATE foam grips. Other than that it's a great rod and if they had more of a selection I would buy a few more. Tight Lines, Jacob
  17. I just ordered a 7'6" powell diesel casting rods a few days ago. I really don't like buying rods without being able to hold them first, but oh well.
  18. Well atleast you're not a Rockies fan like me, they're making it really hard to watch a game without throwing something
  19. Man, way to make me feel insignificant

Here is an example on how things work in Utah. Utah is a Trout fishery period, quite a few of our rivers and lakes have special regs on them (artificial fly and lure only.) Well a particular stretch of river I used to fly fish quite often held many 20"+ rainbow and cutt throat trout in it about ten years ago. Well they thought of a brilliant Idea to introduce brown trout into it. This stretch of river is mostly fished by fly fishermen and they don't really keep anything they catch. The state is aware of this and has the stats to prove it, but still kept the artificial fly and lure only reg on it. Now a days you're lucky to get anything over 12" out of there. The river is being overran by the brown trout and the rainbows and cuttthroat are almost non-existent. They finally opened this stretch of river up to bait fishing two years ago. This past RAC meeting when asked why they waited so long to change it they stated they where waiting for river to "correct" itself and finally decided that it wasn't going to work, so they changed the regs, This was one the best rivers around, but now it's a far cry from what it was. I can tell you many more stories like this too unfortunately.

Fowlskies, I would be lying if I say I haven't. I've fished for bass while during the spawn twice since I've started bass fishing. That's in a four year period counting this year. It's an interesting experience, but did feel kinda bad about doing it.I'm also the guy that has a hard time keeping any type of fish I may catch (I'm sentimental I guess ) And to answer you're second question Utah is a trout fishery first and foremost. They don't seem to care about anything else it seems. The only warm water fish they seem to keep a handle on are Wipers and Tiger Muskies which get planted pretty regularly, probably being their hybrids and can't spawn.

I have spear fished as well for Burbot in Flaming George (Which have no limit.) and I can say it can be very hard. I just don't see why anyone would want to target a fish that's sitting on a bed no matter the species? to me it wouldn't be very fun. It's literally like shooting fish in a barrel.

I'm no hunter, but I think a lake trout life span is greater than a deer's. Also Utah does a horrific job at managing our warm water fisheries. A lot of places have no size limit what so ever with just a normal bag limit of 5. I watched a video of a spearfishing tourney that they held on Jordanelle Res last year and they speared tons of larger small mouth. Our state record is only 7lbs and I've seen many pics of fish over 5 and 6 pounds taken while spearfishing. It makes it very difficult to catch a trophy sized fish when everyone around is keep their bag limits. I'm not blaming the spear fishermen, I just think it's unethical to spear fish while on their spawning beds.
